Full Moon Hubcaps

Here's the real thing for Moon Disks. None of those sissy snap on moons.

If your ever in SoCal the Moon store is a kick. They have some of the old cars from their glory days and a nice showroom with clothing and the rest.

 

I was there when I lived in SoCal in the mid 1950s. I think I was about 12 when my brother took me over there when he was on leave from the Air Force. I don't remember anything but the Moon disks.

 

Not on a Prius, where most of the braking is regenerative (disc brakes aren't used). If you live in a city and do a lot of stop-and-go it might be different, but I've checked my front wheels sometimes after I get home and they're not even warm. Whereas I just walk past my wife's car and I can feel the heat emanating out.

 

I was wondering if the discs aren't sealed on the outside ege they could have a scoop effect instead of a smoothing effect?

Interesting subject; what are they intended to do, where'd they come
from, are they legal?

A semi-exhaustive 'net search has uncovered:
* They were never OEM equipment, always have been after-market
* An "old-school" item, apparently meant to enhance the visibility of
rear lights.
* They may go way back to 6V electrical systems.
* Legality varies state by state.
* Current use on cars greatly discouraged by general arrangement of
rear light assemblies with multiple lights covered by a single clear lens
-- requires baking to gain access.

Curious situation in Merlin (Maryland):
* "blue dot illumination" is specifically permitted on motorcycles for
"driver protection" since 2008. Md. TRANSPORTATION Code § 22-221
(Also so permitted in Pennsylvania since '06.)
* blue dots come under a general prohibition on all other vehicles.
Md. TRANSPORTATION Code Ann. § 22-227(f)

That said the rear-facing face of the roughly cubic red plastic cover
over the rear running lights on the Gen II would be the perfect
location/application.

Blue dots are currently available in plastic and crystal.

In the olden daze SoCal they were usually on lowered chrome laden cars, the forerunners on low riders. They made the tail light look purple until you got close then you could see the blue dot in the middle of the lens. Supposedly that meant you were too close, or maybe it was just made-up justification for using them.

 

the hubcaps aren't awesome but they are unique. you didn't like the stock look, and were trying for different, and you got it. i'd bet you could (have someone) airbrush something sweet on those silver caps and take it to the next level... better have a maintenence plan to get the crud out from behind them on a regular basis though.

If you're gonna' paint 'em, you could save a whole bunch of cash
by using pizza pans either screwed to the rim or the wheel cover.

Could you mount them to a base factory aero ring on the 2nd gens. They also have snap on mooneyes hubcaps, wonder if those would work

Heck yeah, I'm reviving this long dead thread. I lost a single hub cap a couple months ago, and I just had my tires rotated, so it's now on the driver's side and I see it every day. I got to thinking about replacements and started imagining full moons for a "space ship" look. Has anybody tried the moons post above? I can do some drilling and riveting to fasten discs to stock wheel covers, but I'm wondering if the moons linked above are plug and play.
