Interesting expose on higher octane marketing:

    Pump Fiction - Marketplace

I favour Chevron (regular octane), mainly just latched onto a brand, and figure it's one less variable (if there is any variation), if I'm monitoring mpg. Also, they have free air, about the only brand in our area.

I thought Costco gas wasn't top tier. Where did you get that info?

According to a pamphlet at Arco stations, their gas is equivalent to top tier.

I think you might be right but I don't think I would see substantial gains with chevron. I think it's all in the mind when it comes to which brand name gas is better.

I've read somewhere that switching brands every 4-5K miles could be helpful as well, since use of one brand alone could cause deposits....anyone else hear of this? I've used Redline S1 injection cleaner on past cars as well but not sure if I need to use on the Prius yet.

All fuels will cause deposits. IMO, anything other than BG,Chevron Techron, or the 3M chemicals are snake oil

Sounds like one of those interweb legends with no real basis in fact.
There's no evidence that use of injector cleaners has value on ANY car, even less likely on a Prius. Earlier injector technology and fuels might have been a different situation. Chevron with Techron has been shown to accomplish adequate cleaning. Note that Texaco with Techron is the same gas.

FreeRide, it looks like you've embedded your response in a quote, anyway:

Going from 57 mpg to around 65 mpg is roughly 10% improvement. I can't see this: if legislation adding a 10% gas additive cut mileage by 10%, there'd be torches and pitchforks in the street, LOL.

Are you saying (1) no detergent additives are needed for any reason, ever for Prius, or are you saying (2) some detergent additives help but for other reasons besides injectors? If detergent are not needed, then Techron is not needed, right? I am under the impression EPA requires a certain minimum level of detergent additive, and TopTier.com gasolines contain more than the EPA minimum if needed to achieve the optimum level of detergency.
