$5.00 a gallon - probably in Canada and/or the rest of the world where its' like $1.20-$1.50 a LITER... which is like 3.8 liters to the gallon which makes it around 4.75 or so a gallon. So think about that a moment - if the rest of the world's consumers is paying let's say cheap - $4.50 a gallon why are WE, in the USA, paying a dollar or two less.
*shrug* dropping 50 cents a gallon is a valid possibility depending on other aspects - but $2 a gallon!? that's assuming it's $2.50 a gallon now... Heh - It's $3.15 a gallon for regular here in New York - but I fill premium at $3.30-$3.38 a gallon - SOOOOooo - it's gonna be awhile for me.
However, instead of spending about $850 a year in gasoline with my Prius ($1768'ish over 26months over 27,700 miles), if it drops 50 cents, I will be saving that much more.
I have no delusions about $1 a gallon anymore... like it was back in the late 1990's... while I was driving my Nissan Maxima - V6... VROOOM VROOOM!!!!! But u know, racing to the next red light has become overrated.

I am still waiting for the 50 cent drop in price. Funny thing is that the price has been going up (instead of down) in my neck of the woods.

Yep. About $0.15 in the past two weeks. I will be shocked if we don't see $4 somewhere in Calif by May 1.

Not in your Prius, I hope. Waste of money, and more polluting.

Some folks just refuse to understand that "premium" gas has less energy than regular and is for high-compression engines because of its higher ignition point.

They think that because it's called "premium" it must be "better" and they want the "best" for their Prius, so their lack of knowledge and refusal to follow the owner's manual leads them to damage their car with gas that is inferior for their kind of engine.

On the other hand, to be fair, maybe Calvin is driving a muscle car that does require higher-octane gas.

There are gas stations where Premium (91 octane) is already at (or above) $4.00/gallon in the S.F. Bay Area. I personally expect that by Memorial Day 2008, there will be gas stations selling Regular (87 octane) for north of $4.00/gallon.

Like I said, I am still waiting for the 50 cent per gallon price drop to materialize.

I wouldn't be suprised to see a drop soon only because of spectulators taking profits in the futures market, however, I think we will being seeing some record highs once the summer driving season begins this year.

Maybe; maybe not. As refiners switch to Summer blend, the price seems to inevitably go up (allegedly due to the different (more expensive) additives for Sumer blend...). Summer blend is being cooked up as we are posting about it.

I paid $3.35 / gal for regular unleaded at a Chevron station last night. That is up about $0.25 since the beginning of the month. I bought my car one year ago on 2/25. I notice the same pattern occuring this year with respect to the price of gas. It went up about $0.20 in Feb, then really took off in March.

When should I expect my $0.50 drop?

Small world; I bought mine on Feb 27th last year.

Personally, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the price to drop. You might experience hypoxia as a result.

Tomorrow will be my 1 year anniversary. I should get a cupcake or something. It's amusing to me that even with the steep increase in gas prices and no particular change in driving patterns (except for a slightly longer commute) I'm still spending less per month on gas than I did with the Camry.

That said I think this summer is going to be pretty brutal in terms of gas prices. I haven't seen $4 gas around my area yet but I'm expecting it to show up soon.

Gas around here (in the south O.C.) has gone up almost 50 cents in the past few week. Oh I guess that means by spring it'll stop costing more? ... or does that make it the same. In any event, I'm laying odds that less than 6 months after the election, we see $4/ gallon + as the national norm. Maybe I better get that fuel cel adapter I saw on the web :p

I drove past that Chevron station today at lunch. The price of regular unleaded is now $3.47. Their price for #2 Diesel is $3.97.

Where is Malorn? Did he mean that the price would drop 50 cents after it goes up by $.75?

At a Chevron station in San Mateo: Regular (87 octane) is 3.779 and Premium (91 octane) is 3.999. Fortunately, there are Chevron stations that are selling for less, but prices sure aren't headed Southward. Even in a recession. Go figure.

We in California set the trends for the rest of the country. ;)

I wish Malorn was right. I'm afraid that the coming recession may put me out of my current job.
