"What have you done for me lately?" is not a new game in either business or politics, but memories have become shorter and the loop tighter.

Tesla may be the only EV manufacturer with an assembly line in California, but that's very previous-decade. (or two?)

They're also the only EV manufacturer to have moved their headquarters out of California, and that was rather recent. To some, that will count more.

One good thing about this is that the long-gone EV credits for the Prius Prime should be available in California again, assuming that the battery-capacity requirement is not too high.

If this is a reincarnation of the Clean Vehicle Rebate Project (CVRP), we are probably only looking at about $1,000 for the Prius Prime though, which is not much.

    Article is paywalled.

I don’t understand how this is proposed to work.
Is Newsom saying California will increase state rebates for EVs (other than Tesla) to make up for Trump cutting them?
Or are they excluding Tesla from the ZEV credit system?

    Thanks :)

    That article covered it well.

As stated, it does leave Newsom an ‘out’.
I don’t believe Trump will actually repeal the tax credit.
I do believe the requirements to get the credit will make qualifying extremely rare.

58 billion yearly budget deficit , now racked up for over 1 trillion. LOL
Gavin newsom.. pure genius. Perfect example of how to run a once beautiful state into the ground. Trying to financially cripple ONE successful business in his State because he's a political opponent .... all after spending a billion CA tax dollars for BYD covid masks (no experience in medical supplies) for 4 times the cost - as he sits mask-less in the most expensive French restaurant in the state without a mask ... masks for Californians even as the virus is diminishing.
And don't get me started on Gavin's byd electric bus deal

How many billions are the California coffers going to be in debt next budget ?
Is it any wonder over 360,000 businesses/jobs lost since covid? .... even as the rest of the nation has regained 5 million?

Any moron can see if he pursues this, there will be litigation, which could end CARB's ability to maintain even its existing rules. Yeah, way to go Newsome.

Baaah - click bait - this guy's verbalizations will never amount to actual legislation, much less ever passing.

For those not clicking links, Newsom wants to restart a California EV rebate program if the the federal credits are cancelled. The proposed new version will have a market cap limitation with the goal of helping out smaller EV makers and programs. That will leave Tesla out.

The Tesla acreage in California Fremont is some 400 + Acres. It hires 20,000. Not that Gavin newsom's stupid legislation this stupid will ever pass, but who wouldn't put it past Musk to move the 20,000 workers over to Nevada and then abandon the Manufacturing site (Newsome has already driven lots of other businesses out of state) & the site could then be used to house some of the 185,000+ Californian homeless.
They could have a stupid contest & see who can out stupid the other.

Do you really think Musk would be eager to rebuild that entire manufacturing site at 2025 prices (good luck finding construction labor!) vs. the comparative bargains he got in up-cycling the Fremont plant?

He'd have to raise the car prices by a lot more than the tax credit free ride he has been getting. That would count for rather a lot of stupid in my book, but I'm not out to underestimate the guy.

Fremont is the least efficient production Tesla has for transportation.
I’m guessing Tesla would not have much of a loss doing this.
I, however, refuse to guess what Musk will do. The man has gone off the deep end.

Doesn't California have much bigger problems?

    *shrug*

A two year old Bloomberg report suggests that the Fremont plant isn't exactly chopped liver. (Reader mode beats the paywall for me, anyway)

I grant you that they're probably doing better-still at the Austin plant, and I'd imagine that they're doing bestest in the Shanghai plant, but I think it's fair to expect some headwinds in bringing Shanghai output to bear in the USA.

I agree. My point was not that Fremont should be as efficient as Shanghai. It was that Tesla won't loose that much ground closing it.
It is also very efficient by legacy auto standards. Just not as efficient as Germany or Austin.

Keep in mind that Newsom called for an Emergency legislative session in California the day after the election results wich will do lots of impressive forms of resistance to this incompetent leadership. For example the Attorney General has already spent the past year reviewing 120 lawsuits the state filed against the Trump admin last time around and they plan to appropriate another $100 Million for additional litigation based on knowledge and experience, which is something the revolving door of rapidly fired leadership of Trump adminstation will never have.

must be nice - to be Head of the state in debt 1 trillion as California is - but plan to spend another billion of other people's money rather than using that to pay down 1/1,000 of the debt. But maybe that billion isn't real money but rather just more borrowed debt on top of debt. No wonder people & businesses are fleeing the state.
