I have a 2005 Gen 2 Prius with 135k miles in Glendale, CA.

Problem: The engine started rattling like crazy and a mechanic I found on Yelp reported the error codes as Cylinder 1 misfire. He says they checked the spark plugs and they were good. He claims I need a re-built engine and quoted at $4000.

The mechanic wasn't specifically a "Prius mechanic" - a friend recommended I post here and ask advise from you lovely Prius enthusiasts.

Should I be trying to re-sell the Car if the repair is nearly worth the same as the engine? Is there anyone near Glendale, CA that could help me diagnose & verify this problem (I will compensate you) - I just need an opinion from someone that's a true Prius expert.

Has your mechanic check to see if the coil was to blame? A used engine costs about $1500 installed

I honestly don't trust this guy. He claimed I needed a rebuilt engine before he even checked the codes. If there's any mechanics near Glendale, CA I will gladly have it towed to you and compensate you for your time.

    Has the car ever overheated?

If not, then your most likely issue is the spark plugs or a bad coil. Why is your title "transmission" problem?

My recently acquired 07 ran like crap. Vibrating, hesitating, etc. P0301 0303 and 0304. $26 for new plugs. Running flawlessly.

No overheating at all until this incident... I guess my "Transmission problem" is a wrong statement. I guess I'm just a noob at knowing my car. But it's an engine problem and I think im getting swindled by a mechanic in Glendale.

So my guess would be replacement spark plugs and possibly coil would fix your problem. Under $200
