Just got a 2010 prius 3. In reading other threads here, the database is on a dvd which is read every time the car is started. but how can that be? When i ejected the cd player (does it even read a dvd?) For the first time, there was no disk in there. And if that was true, it wouldnt be able to play a cd and navigate at the same time. It must have hard drive or some non- volatile storage, and its just updated from a NavTek dvd? Or does the updste msybe have to be done at toyota dealership for a whopping 200.00?

The nav info is on its own DVD, in a separate drive, so the update is accomplished with a new DVD (which ain't cheap).

Gen 2 had the DVD under the seat. Gen 3 is different stories, because 2010 and 2011 had one choice for nav, where the DVD is in a separate slot below the CD slot (you need the screen folded out to see either one, and you need the right menu on the touch screen to tell it to eject the map).

Later Gen 3s, 2012 on, had two nav choices, and one has an internal hard drive that's updated by copying from a USB key, and the other has a replaceable SD card that people occasionally post about dropping between the seat cushions or in some other evil spot.
