While I find that a rather odd omission on Toyota's part . It is what it is...thanks.

Although a bit pricey a lot of us use a scan gauge II from Linear-Logic to display RPM and many other bits of data like temperatures, voltages, current, and even now individual tire pressures and temperatures. Their customer service and support is excellent.

You can also get one of those cheapo obd2 adapters and connect it to your phone using torque or some other app for a lot less. I own a scangauge and they are awesome, but given how cheap the obd2 adapters are nowadays, this is the cheapest solution. Once you get an idea how the car runs, really the RPM's don't matter a whole lot other than for informational purposes only. FYI I owned a manual before, so no tach is a bit annoying at first.

    Here's a hybrid with a Tachometer:

    upload_2017-12-11_18-47-3.png

but at $250,000+ it's in a different class.

I believe that PRIUS never had a tachometer, plus I don't see the point of having a tachometer - what would you use it for. It's not like you'd be matching revs to double de-clutch. They forgot the clutch for that. With Hybrid SYNERGY Drive, there is nothing you can do which, having a tachometer, will affect.

As far as I know, no TOYOTA Hybrids do (Corolla or Camry) nor LEXUS hybrids either. I believe IONIQ doesn't either, even with a Dual Clutch transmission.

I think VOLVO XC-90 and AUDI eTRON et al have a tachometer, but they're 2-3+ times the price of a PRIUS.

The BMW I had on my shortlist when I bought PRIUS didn't either:

I can't think of any circumstances in which I would need one. ? Confused ?

The car will not let you rev it too fast and the hybrid system controls the engine speed when driving. And it's not a stick shift.

So even if you knew the engine speed you couldn't do anything to change it except perhaps by driving more slowly.

This website has a good simulation of the relationship of MG1, MG2 and the ICE.

Toyota Prius - Power Split Device

I think my first 4 or 5 cars didn't have tachometers, and without synchromesh on first gear on the first 2 - but you soon learned to match the revs by ear. I think 13 of the 14 cars since - prior to my PRIUS had tachometers.

One thing I've noticed is that cars are deleting more and more gauges - I only remember 2 of my early cars with Ammeters and one with a Voltage Gauge - 4 decades ago, I haven't had an Oil Pressure Gauge for at least 30 years, Vacuum Gauges seem to have disappeared in the mid '80s, and my last car, a FIESTA didn't have a Temperature Gauge.

I suppose, when we make the transition to Autonomous Cars, the only gauge we'll have is one of these

I started driving a 1962 Ford Falcon 2 door station wagon, with 3 on the tree, the only gauges I recall was fuel and water temp.
My wife's current vehicle, a Chevy Tahoe, has tach, oil pressure, water temp, fuel, and voltage.
Vacuum gauges were important when we had carburetors, less so with fuel injection.

The sender for oil pressure of a Prius is digital, you either have some or you don't, so no gauge is possible without an additional sender.

I add tach, intake air temp, water temps and instant MPG. (dash uses tank MPG, and has outside air temp)

The prius PHV GR sport and Prius α GR sport in Japanese market do come with tachometer, too bad it's not available elsewhere.

RPM for MG2, ICE, or both?
Prime would need to add MG1 too, I suppose since it can be used for acceleration.

MG2 is the main component driving the wheels with assistance at time, by ICE (& MG1 on Prime).

I think it is for ICE. Also, I just remember for Lexus CT200h when you are sport mode, the tachometer for ICE will appear to replace the power gauge.

MG2 is absolutely linear with wheel speed, so to some degree your speedometer is a Tach for MG/2.

Ultimately, I don't much miss it. Pretty much any modern, computer-controlled automatic transmission car, it's window dressing. I really do miss coolant temp though, used to be a standard gauge, on every car.

Really like those interior GR touches. The silverish radio surround is probably much easier to keep clean (a textured surface would also work). Add the bone china console and I'm sold. Too bad we probably won't get those upgrades here in the states.

The tachometer on the GR is for bling only. It has NO other use! YOU cannot control the engine RPM other than by speeding up or slowing down or trying to accelerate faster or slower. In a Prius there are no gears to shift, and no eCVT points to program or switch between.

But if the bling factor makes you happy buy a "Scangauge". It displays RPM if you like. Among other, more useful things. ;)
