57 now; nominally 8 years to go!

I’ve spent a boatload of my time the past dozen years on learning Chinese (wife is from China), and on work. Both are interesting in their own rights, but my musical life has faded quite a bit, sadly...

Anyway, don’t want to get too far off topic!

OK you can be in my community band...but TX is a little far , but you have a Prime so that helps.

Here is the $64,000 question- What it Toyota USA price quote for a new Li replacement batt for Gen4?

We really do not have much official info on Gen1-3 Batt Failure rates. Consumer Reports 2013 survey indicated maybe 85-90% survival rate overall for really old 10+ year old Prii, but we wouldn't know if Toyota was able to improve on that over the years.

We did surveys here which indicated a bit higher Gen2 failure rates, although it is hard for us to correct for bias that folks reporting in here tend to have bat batts. UART's survey attempted to correct for that bias. At the most we had 100-150 survey responses, and my guess is today we'd have hard time getting that many survey responses(eg; for Gen2 where most of the bad batts are).

EDIT, this site may not be accurate. It lists the Prime battery as Nickel Metal.:(

As I recall, somebody earlier reported $11K, installed, for a P.Prime, but I can’t personally confirm that.

My recollection is that O’Toyta has only had three cars that use Lithium batteries: The original PiP, the gen-4 “Eco” version and the P.Prime. Undoubtedly, the battery for the P.Prime would be the most expensive.

The good news is early on, there are usually plenty of wrecks for cheap used Prii batts, until such time as the failure rate exceeds the wreck rate.

Actually, all US Gen 4 except the One & Two (Two ECO & up) use Li-Ion.

Personally, if I really liked a car and there was no significant structural rot, I'd repair any car with a great body and interior. Even if the cost of repairs was more than the car is worth, it would be far less than the depreciation and car payments on a new car.

As previously stated that link from "The Onion" is satire, as is their whole site.

Another article quoting that one made the comment that there are only 2 things that could survive a nuclear holocaust.

We didn't need it - all the family had better cars, we tried to sell it to a couple of youngsters who might use it for a University car, but nobody was interested. Plus - at 300,000km it would only take one issue to make it not worth it. I suspect the wrecker would have fixed it - many of the smaller wreckers keep the better cars, swap a few bits and sell them as a going concern.

I selected the 2016 Two because it had the old proven battery. I'll drive it till I drop.

Let's hope that won't be for quite a while yet. I'm the reciprocal of your age +1 year!

I am not sure which is sadder. The fact you made that mistake or the fact I understood what you actually meant. In my defense, it is morning and I had not yet had my first cup of coffee. @alanclarkeau 's posting made me take a second look.

Hey! I am young. I am just three years into my career!
Well it is the 9th career. And at least two lasted over a decade each ... And none were less than two years ... and there were those 9 years of college ... And that one year I was in the hospital ...
