The whole bill was just over $800, almost all of it labor. I don't work on my car, except to clean it. My mechanic uses all brand new parts for this car.

That's four screws and four clips, and don't forget the windshield wipers and cowl.

When Toyota sells the igniters, I don't think they're $15 each.

Thats fair, i had to take off my windshield wipers and cowl about 40 times that each time i can do it in less than 5 mins due to the repetition. But i also only have like 5 screws holding the cowl because the previous owner never put them back. But its a old car with many miles so im not too worried. This beater will be beat to the ground and i will suck it dry for all its worth, all $3,000 i spent buying it. Its a fun little appliance toy.

Anyways, i feel your pain OP. Im mad for you, mechanics are vultures that prey upon the desperation of the un-informed. Shady business all around. I wanna start my own mechanic shop just out of spite and do jobs for really cheap to undercut all the shady mechanics.

As suggested upthread, using a $15 junkyard or knockoff price for the igniters will kind of make the dealer charge look like a ripoff.

If you're being sold the Toyota igniters at suggested list price, the four of those is $500 right there. Some dealers might sell them for 20 or 30 percent less.

Amayama has Toyota coils, AND third party coils, which "may" be identical, and significantly cheaper. For the one of the latter, at least at my location, shipping is "to be determined". They've told me in such cases if you commence a purchase you will be shown the shipping cost, before needing to commit. I'd suspect the shipping would be similar to the ones where shipping is shown.

    Main page:

    Coils:

This I'd suspect is the the best buy, and probably the same coil:
