    Can you charge the 12V battery through the jumper spot under the hood, or does it have to be hooked directly to the battery?

    I suspect that the major difference is that with the Toyota-branded charger it'd be much harder for the dealer or Toyota to argue that you voided your warranty etc etc by using a charger which for some reason they think is wrong.

    [ an auto mfgr which needs to get back into the black and be profitable almost always tightens down on warranty approvals. That has not only an immediate cash effect, but lets them lower the reserve they booked for future warranty costs. Guess how I know ... been there, seen that]
