I'm leaving Sunday for a little road trip from Tucson to the coast in Oregon to see a total eclipse. I'm lucky enough to have a sister in Newport, lives on the bay. So I'm going. In my 2002 200,000 mile Prius. I've been getting ready. It's the pretty red one with fancy wheels. It will be at least 3000 miles, I think.

The car has a new aux battery, a 4 year old HV, records of a replacement inverter pump, a good replacement brake booster pump, relatively new tires, brakes, wheels. It seems to all work together pretty well. Everything except the power locks works.

I've changed the transaxle oil, the inverter coolant, the brake fluid, and will get the oil changed out today.

I've checked the inverter reservoir for flow & turbulence, looks good.

Any thoughts on what else to service? Or check?

Woo hoo! I'm getting kinda excited. Gotta remember not to grind the little car too bad!

Tire pressure, dont forget to check your spare tire pressure. Rotate the tires if its been awhile. Maybe throw a little seafoam in the gas tank if you're feeling adventurous.

How long you planning on staying there? When you plan on passing through the Bay Area or Sacto on your way up? We could probably pull together an impromptu meet up if you wanted to meet some other members .

Sounds like a fun trip in a classic Prius :). I still see a fair bit of them around the North and East Bay on my commute. I even saw a Mirai today!

    Safe travels (y).

Those going to Newport will get to see the total solar eclipse AND a 2001 Prius - two rare events!

Ray, thanks for the thought, I have a brother and other family in Reno, tho. So kinda necessitates running up thru Vegas and Reno. Also keeps me off I-5 or SR-99 thru the Central Valley.

I see 2 classic Pri's everyday. In my own carport and driveway!

I have a brand new (this summer) Douglas tire on a stock Prius mag in the trunk. I tossed the donut when I got the new, pretty wheels from Discount Tire. Donuts are pretty useless, 15 year old donuts are dangerous. You did inadvertently remind me to get the torque wrench out and tork the wheels.

I use either Shell or Chevron gas, so the injectors are pretty clean. And I buy Techron by the quart. Stuff really works over the long haul. Can't wait to get outa the SW desert heat!

I didn't know there was more than one version of Techron.

I use the stuff you can get at any autoparts store or even Walmart.

if you wanna be super anal you can also check all your lights and signals, replace your wipers and top off your washer fluid.

When were the iridium spark plugs last replaced?
When was the engine coolant last replaced?
Engine air filter and cabin air filter condition?
What is the tire pressure? I would bring that up to 44 psi/42 psi front/rear if you don't have it there yet.

Have fun viewing the eclipse next Monday!

I am in Reno, now. First 800+ miles and the car performed flawlessly! Got an honest 41 mpg. Set the cruise and go. The real luxury of these cars is going 350 miles without refueling. But also, the seating position is the least likely to cripple you up over a long haul.
