i'm not 100% sure of this but i think the ceramic tint can prevent the fastrak transponders from working right. i know that fastrak makes bumper-mounted transponders and they talk about ceramic window tints as the reason for their existence on the fastrak website.

it could be that some cars have special windshields with the ceramic stuff built in and it does not apply to aftermarket tints. but i thought i'd mention it.

Interesting. I've always thought the metallic films were responsible for wacky reception and transmission.

I was under the same impression. Unless "metallic" and "ceramic" are one in the same, I was under the impression that ceramic films were developed to counter the reception and transmission issues with metallic films. However, I don't really have a lot of experience with tints - this was just something I read somewhere.

A suggestion....don't. You need all the help you can get when diving and tinting will reduce the vison you have to the rear and sides, putting you at a disadvantage. At night when backing up, any one or anything behind you is a at risk. Why make your neat new car more dangerous to handle.

    My advice, save your money.

you know what, i think you are right. i should have checked before posting... it's metal oxide coatings which are the problem, which makes sense. sorry bout that.

No worries. I'm still not 100% certain, so I'll be sure to ask the tint guy about that. Thanks for the input.

Solar heating may be less of an issue in MN than in MS, but I did a 35% tint on the sides and main hatch to reduce the amount of time to cool the car by 1/2 hour each trip. My state allows a 28% tint on sides and back, so with the factory tint I am still legal in MS. It really does make the car more pleasant in the summer months. (Compared to MN, I suspect 9 of our months are summer) A more comfortable driver is a safer driver.

On the other hand, as I read the MN tint law summary, legal tint would be almost useless in MN.

I have the really dark tint on the back, and I think 28% on the fronts (I'd have to find the paperwork and check - it was 2 years ago). I wish I'd gone lighter up front, because it does make seeing and reading out the front sides pretty difficult at night. I've had times where I drove with the window down just to see better when I was looking for something. I recommend 35% up front due to that reason. Again, just a personal thing, and if I ever had to remove the front for any reason, I'd go lighter up front.

I was thinking about going 35 all the way around, or maybe a phased look, progressively dark to light from back to front - something like a 15/25/35. I kinda want it to be pretty dark in the back, but I'm worried that the phased look will look funky.

Thanks for the quick reply. Just wondering... What's the difference between the first 2 and the last 2 shots?

I guess one is outside the garage and one is inside, I was in a hurry considering you were leaving in 30 min. :D

    Good luck bro!

Yeah, that's what I figured. I probably won't be going as dark as 5, but the visibility didn't look too bad. Thanks again.

So just an update... I went with Wincos ceramic films. 20s in the back, 30s in the front, and 70 on the windshield. My PiP isn't done yet, but I'll post some pics when it's back from the shop.

I saw they are using 3 different kinds. What's the price for each of them? Do you know? Thanks for the update and look forward to see some pictures. :D

I was going to ask about tinting vs. the California Vehicle Code, but I see that this was discussed early in this thread. It seems to disallow ALL after-market tinting. I would think it would be a real bummer to spend a lot of money getting a nice tint job, and then get pulled over and cited and required to remove it.
