My dealer "confiscated" that. Luckily, I have a backup. :)

I just got the upgrade and it is 03.3, which is what I had, or maybe I had 03.1!!! I will complain at once. Or maybe they didn't change it.

Do you lose your settings when they change it? (I did not.)

I asked for the old DVD and they refused to give it to me. Said they had to send it back! Ha.

For grins, here's what the 4.2 DVD looks like.

Looks like NAVTEQ is responsible for the data, and it's copyrighted 2003 - which means we're still looking at year-old data.

If you got your car in August, you probably already had v3.3 which means they didn't change it (or maybe they did but accidentally inserted the wrong disk?).

Regardless, definitely complain! You should have gotten v4.2.

I called the service guy--he says they put in the "new" disk. I called the Toyota customer # and they were pretty terrific. Was bumped up to "corporate" immediatley and Eddie took over, called the dealer, called the parts guy at the dealer. Seems as though they ordered the part that went with the car (3.3), but not as per the special offer letter. I gave the parts guy a copy of the letter when he ordered and the service desk to show I did not have to pay. I got a free car wash (just a hose off--car dripping) and the same DVD. Waited an hour, got bug bites, went twice. Gee, great "award winning Presidential" service. Luckily, I don't expect much on the "Nature Coast" of Florida. Now I am waiting for Eddie to call me with what to do next--i.e. he is taking over.

Meanwhile, when you insert the new DVD, do you have to redo your POI's etc? If not, where is the data stored? Obviously if they changed the DVD, I kept the data...IF they changed it.

And I thought it had been easy.

Yes, it should be 4.2 and quoting the PriusChat as the "authority" helped!

    Thanks guys.

Oh, and Danny, thanks for something else. When you had your crash you mentioned that Google is the best tech support...that got me thinking about a Norton issue I was having that nobody could solve. So I googled my query a few different ways, went right to a computer chat room that had a link to a patch...and it is fixed! Saved me a huge uninstall and reinstallation, which even then might not have fixed it.

:) You asked if I lost my settings....

I did have to re-set my "region" but all other settings; "Home" and other registered "points" were still all OK. Everything works same as before - I have noticed some street/highway updates and some POI updates.

Charles, when you first installed the new DVD, your region changed from the Texas region to the New York region, right?

I believe the DVD is read only. The My Places, calendar, phone book, etc stuff is probably stored by the Nav computer on a R/W magnetic drive or non volitile memory.

    :) Hi "Mashed Pototo" - !

Actually, my new Version 4.2 DVD defaulted to Area 1 (Pacific Northwest) until I changed it to my area (5) Texas/Oklahoma.

Just got my letter today, then discovered this topic.

I wonder if there are any algorithm updates. I notice
that sometimes the recalculation tries to get you back
to the original route, rather than determining a new
route based on the new locations.

I've always wished three routes would include a
freeway route, as well as a fast surface street
route and the short route. You can get the
same effect by allowing freeways and comparing
the short route with the freeway route.

Has anyone noticed that sometimes the short
route is quicker than the two quick routes?

Sometimes three rights does make more sense than
a left, but three lefts instead of a right?

I've noticed a few peculiarities when driving about,
odd little round about turns. Like turning left onto
Venice from north bound La Cienega (LA). The one
serious one I've discovered is being directed to bear
right onto 101 when the correct thing to do (according
to the map as well) is to stay left and end up on the 170,
the Hollywood Freeway is 101 then 170 when 101 becomes
    the Ventura Freeway.

The "free update" offer is good till 12/31/*05*, I'm wondering
if it makes sense to wait till it is closer to the expiration date
    to do the update.

Is it the case that the DVD uses the new dual layer
technology? Must be if they are getting 8gb on the
disk. How are people able to make copies of these
disks? Do they have recorders that use the new
technology? I just read about dual layer the first
time a week or so ago.

With Toyota's gift of v4.2 for everyone, I feel safe in relating this little story, which may help someone in the future...

Our family has two Priuses. The first came with NAV v3.1, the second with v4.2. Wanting the updated disk in both cars, I copied the DVD by including only the files of my region, since not all the regions would fit on a DVDR.

When I inserted the DVDR, I received an error message that something was wrong with the disk. I burned several before I realized the region had unexpectedly changed, and the NAV was looking for a file that I had excluded. A solution then presented itself.

An S will find little value in this story. An SJ will think what I did might be wrong. An STJ will post tough words about it.

    Temperamentally yours,

    Mashed Potato

So, you're saying you can just go ahead and delete all the (numbered) .IDX files that don't correspond to your region? :)

Deleting the numbered .IDX files is the simple solution, but doesn't work if the NAV switches regions--what it inexplicably seems to do when you "upgrade" to a new version. The NAV gets in an endless loop and you can't switch regions back.

A solution was to make fake .IDX files for the regions I didn't need. Not knowing if the file format would make a difference, a small file was chosen from the other .IDX files to act as the substitute.

(Myer's-Briggs has been a great tool towards helping me understand life.)

Excellent! This is really going to help all of those who want to make a backup of their NAV DVD but have SL DVD writers (rather than DL writers) in their PCs.

Of course, you could just copy the DVD to your HD until you get access to a DL burner and media.

hmmm... as i dont have a DVD writer as of yet, (i just cant generate much hope in the media's longevity im afraid. to me its just trying to extend the CD's life as a viable computer storage medium which will probably be here for a while only because of its penetration into the existing market and not because its the best (or even a good) way to go.) i guess the hard drive is by far the best way to go.

now that portable media is just beginning to make it here that has comparable storage capacity, i will not be buying a DVD writer either. in a year or two, when the new mini drives are reasonable (only a fool or the extreme end of the "must have it" technophobe would pay the current price for one)

but i dont have nav either, but it might be nice to take a look at whats on the disk anyway
