Google Maps Scavenger Hunt

Just a note that I'll be keeping Post #166 up to date with a list of all landmarks posted and identified, to help prevent duplicates (as well as show just how wild and eclectic this game gets at times).

I've posted way too many already, so I'll stand back awhile and let others put their challenging views into the arena.

The US Tour of The Da Vinci Experience is in Sacramento until September 30th.
This is the first time these models have made it to California.

Yes, indeed. That's part of why my hint was so obscure... I had another hint lined up that would tie that in better, but Evan beat me to it. I'll give better hints next time

Hard picture, so here's an easy hint:

Your clue was a dead giveaway - Trinity Site, White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico - but finding the damn thing on Googlemaps was very difficult - and I'm not convinced you have the right place: I suspect that This Place Here a mile or so away is the actual Trinity Site where, as the title of a book so ominously puts it, "The Sun Rose Twice" when the first nuclear bomb was detonated in 1945.

I've posted so many entries in this game I'll leave the field open to whomever wants to go next.

How about an entry from someone who hasn't posted any at all yet?

I'm not certain about the location either, but you can zoom in way closer on yahoo maps if you wanna check out both spots. I got the coords from wikipedia.

I'm not sure Googlemaps accurately zooms in on latitude & longitude - many times I've seen its ID flags displaced from the actual sites they're supposed to identify. So your Wikipedia coordinates are probably accurate to the fraction of a minute of arc, but Googlemaps is only approximate when zooming in on them. I don't know for sure that the other site is the true site either, but it has the appearance of a tended site (geometrically regular perimeter, fences, looks like a place someone would visit) whereas the original site looks quite a bit more neglected, just tracks in the desert. Good choice, by the way (even if your clue made it obvious).

You guys must have forgotten about this one. I was just there and so it was too easy for me to guess right off the bat.

p.s. Do we have to use aerial shots form Google or can we use other aerial shots so long as they are findable in Google Earth/Maps?

 

I'm stumped on this one... but here's what I can tell from the picture:

1. It's on a mountain top. The switchback in the road tells us that road is on a steep incline.
2. it's overlooking a pretty steep dropoff on the top of the image. Note the shadows of the buildings. They seem like the sun is fairly high, but the long shadows off the rocks show a large vertical drop. Think cliffs.
3. That's probably snow on the ground.
4. if Evan hasn't been tricky and rotated the image, then it's most likely in the northern hemisphere, since the light is coming from the bottom (south).

hmmm.... Mountain top in the northern hemisphere... well that narrows it down.
