Actually, the movement would start with various publications deciding that alternate spellings would be acceptable. Another movement would be educational institutions allowing simpler spellings to be acceptable in teaching kids. That's all it would take. (Have you read Steven Pinker?) He provides good evidence that language takes a path independent of any "master organization" and has constant changes. In a few hundred years English will be quite different than what we have now.

The one that cheeses me off is "your" when "you're" is called for. As in "your stupid."

Who is up for abolishing the lowly apostrophe altogether then, eh?
We do not really need it since everyone knows what is intended regardless of its presence or absence, correct? Let us refrain from using any and all apostrophes from this day forward. While we are at it, let us cease usage of the comma, period, semi-colon, quotation marks, or other non letter modifier as well. These markings clearly are archaic and superfluous in the 21st century.

Obviously any person who reads the English version of Priuschat is fully capable of understanding the most atrocious writing a United States citizen might use short of slang which of course is entirely different. Put me in a room with some teens and it is likely I will have no clue what they are saying when slang is spoken.

Want an example of truely abhorrent grammmar? Go to Zero Hedge. The posts there are mind bottling. And yes, I do mean B-O-T-T-L-I-N-G. Google mind bottling it if you do not know its meaning.

I write and review technical reports for a living. Proper grammar is essential to convey written language since the target audience for written communication is not present to ask "what did you mean?" or "Pardon me chap, could you rephrase what you just said, please?"

Believe me. Finding people who can write at or above an elementary school level is getting harder. It should not be "Are you smarter than a 5th grader". It should be: Can you write better than a 5th grader.

Hyo Silver said I made error(s). I wonder what they were.

It got me to thinking. I know - big trouble.

I said. "I haven't got anything better to do."

Should it have been "I haven't got anything ELSE better to do"? or maybe "I haven't got anything other than this better to do"?" or perhaps " I haven't got another thing better to do"?

Wouldn't the anything suffice? Since I really meant "any-other-thing" but did not actually write that.

Or was it ambiguous of me to assume you readers would know that I meant this?

    Please advise.

OK, but with some reluctance and hopefully some humour. You're the editor - my job is to keep numbers lined up correctly - and I don't intend my nit-picking to be in any way critical of you as a person. We all make misteaks.

Aside from the previously mentioned error in the title, the other was "60's". I think Tony's already mentioned that should be a plural, not a possessive.

Thanks for the offer, but I'd rather proofread my own text. ;)

Sorry, but I couldn't resist (even though I knew what you meant and you are most likely correct anyway) so here goes.

Do you claim that Canadians who don't wear overalls don't write as well as Americans.

And by Americans do you mean United States citizens? Canadians are Americans too.

Because inside every Canadian is an American trying to get out.

But proofreading ones own text sounds so clunky.

Count on your friends at Priuschat to correct your errors for you.

And in all fairness, Hyo - the proofreading comment was in another post, not the OP.

So Priuschatters feel free to edit or correct Jadziasman anytime you like. Shakespeare, I ain't.

Not necessarily. For instance, "It was 60's music." could mean that the music belonged to the number 60. Or it could mean that it belonged to inmate number 60.:D

On the subject of there and their.

When a person says "It was there car." Did he make a grammatical error and actually mean "It was their car." , or did he omit a word and actually mean to say "It was that there car."?

Not insulting. The original quote is: "Inside every gook is an American trying to get out." The line is from that classic war epic 'Full Metal Jacket' if you weren't aware of this.

I have a bad habit of adapting film dialogue to burnish my rapier wit. In addition to viewing way too much TV, I've wasted countless hours watching movies too. Is Priuschat a better use of my time? I think so.

    OK lookit.
Until someone can explain to me why "good" and "food" don't rhyme, I'm not interested.

(actually, I know the etymology so don't bother)

"Blood" is a third pronunciation with the same 'ood' spelling. Enlighten us, Tony.

That's even more insulting. I believe you didn't intend it to be, so I'm not taking offence, but...even ignoring the racial slur, the implication seems to be that everyone wants to be an American. (As in: 'from the USA', with apologies to Mr. Vespucci.) Uh...no. Sorry.

Don't give up good movies entirely just yet, but yeah, this place'll sharpen your wit and your tongue. :)
