What's the "proper fuel"? ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel) has been required in CA since 9/1/06 per http://www.clean-diesel.org/highway.html and a few other places I've looked.

As far as I can, tell, it still doesn't meet the emissions of CA and the 4 other states. http://autos.yahoo.com/green_center-article_31/ mentions:
"At this point, however, the E320 BlueTec is only clean enough to sell in 45 states. Mercedes-Benz anticipates that it will be a 50-state car when it perfects its urea injection AdBlue system, a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) process, sometime by 2009, when even more stringent Bin 5 emissions standards are implemented nationwide. AdBlue Injection treats exhaust gases with a urea solution which releases ammonia, reducing nitrogen oxides to harmless nitrogen and water. The solution is held in a tank that would require a refill only during scheduled maintenance. However promising, Mercedes-Benz still has some work to do ironing out the regulation details (what happens if the AdBlue tanks runs dry, for example, which would significantly increase emissions) with the EPA. The company is optimistic that it will be compliant by the 2009 model year, and has recently announced plans to sell 50-state diesel versions (with AdBlue) of the M-, R-, and GL-class SUVs in 2008."

So, no need to make pit stops on long trips or ask for the restroom key at the gas station........
