There is a guy trying to sell his newly purchased 2015 Volt on fbook
He said it doesn’t work for his commute and is an irritation to plug in when he could just buy another gas only fuel efficient car and below 40mpg doesn’t work for him.

We gave him graphs and questioned him and then found he purchased a new F250 diesel for his daily 180 mile trip

    Makes sense.

Plus register, insure, maintain, park or store, etc. Easier on one vehicle than three.

Which brings up why was stacking policies banned?

As one person with more than one car why do I have to pay as much for a secondary car as a primary?

It used to be $80 more a year to insure my old cars (up until 2012 when insurance became mandatory)

same here. is it state by state?

why not insure the driver, instead of the vehicle?

You don't. With multiple vehicles, insurers offer a multi-vehicle discount. Also, with multiple vehicles and a single driver, the typical annual mileage per vehicle is less, which is also reflected in the rates. If you have a seasonal vehicle, you can suspend registration in the off-season and the insurance company can suspend collision on that vehicle, and maintain just the comprehensive portion. If one of the vehicles is old, drop the collision and comp on that and just hold liability.

Insuring multiple vehicles will always cost more, because more asset value is insured.

    That’s called blanket liability

It’s very difficult to get an insurer to offer it to an individual though I have known one guy that owned 30 vehicles and had an umbrella instead of auto insurance

An umbrella liability policy is as easy to get as a phone call to your insurance company. It doesn't replace auto insurance, it rides on top of a specified minimum auto coverage.

we have an umbrella policy, but it's only 'over and above'. any vehicle here requires close to a thousand dollars of insurance.

It did for him, he only carried the umbrella
blanket liability is on the person not the asset

Most insurers won’t write the policy that way,
Our local buses don’t pay for car insurance and have a blanket fund for coverage.

It is probably the same for all of the city vehicles - pool vehicles, cop cars, maintenance trucks, etc. Many cities and entities are self-insured or have pool policies.

School buses are privately owned in this area and don’t carry car insurance
