Grill blocking (New to a Prius)

    If I'm taking a road trip from Colorado to California, and the lowest and highest temps are respectively 30s and 70s, how much of my grill should I keep blocked, if at all, for best mileage?

    The heat-retention benefit comes from temperatures below freezing. I'm about to remove my blocking now that things are melting here.

    i have removed 50% of the lower grill block on my prius. temps still get to the 20s in mn at night but it is getting up to 50 during the day. will be removing all of it in the next few weeks.

    With temps in the 70's, and maybe some hill climbing? Safest would be no blocking. Doubly so if you might use AC.

    I'm fully blocked almost all the time. I'll pull the uppers when I start seeing high temps. That may happen in the 90's or on cross country trips. I've pulled pieces at rest stops so the heat doesn't continue to build. If you are looking for a range of numbers I agree with Patrick Roderick. Engine coolant 195-200F, inverter coolant 160F.

    Are you using air conditioning? I can't see grill blocking with AC on.

    I removed my grill blocks yesterday, temps now in the 60's some days. I don't believe in taking any unnecessary chances.
    I've been monitoring temps with scan guage. It is obvious thermo opens at 191 and cools quickly. Could probably keep them in to much higher temps, but no real need.IMHO.YMMV.ect!

    Just removed upper blocking today. I think partial blocking has benefits up until A/C is needed ... (the morning temps are below 50 for a while).

    I have scangauge so I am monitoring cooling temp, I would not recommend blocking under heavy load and over 60F temp

    In the summer CC is set around 78. In the winter set around 72.

    Last night's trip to Plymouth-Whitemarsh HS through Philly inverter coolant temp was in the low 90s. OAT was in the 50s & below. ICE coolant was low 180s.

    Route is US1/I-76/I-476 going through residential Palmyra & Tacony section of Philly and Chemical Road exit in Plymouth just before toll booth for the NE Extension.

    Anyone who believes 90F is too hot for the inverter shouldn't be driving in the South or the summer.
