Grinding noise: cause?

    I have a problem with gen 2 prius.
    When i try to start the engine there are major grinding noise and the engine wont start.
    Here are 2 videos about it:



    It all started like this:
    Car was parked for 6h then started the car, reversed out of parking space and when put to drive it stalled and never started again.
    Shows only fault code: P0a90.

    Has someone else had this problem and what can be the cause of the noise?
    Any suggestions what to check?

    sounds like a bad tranny. what is the troublfcode description?

    That DTC (P0A90) has nine (9) different INFs (subcodes) associated with it, you may need a Toyota hybrid compatible OBD2 reader to retrieve the available INFs.

    Please post all known DTCs with any corresponding INFs, and someone will help you shortly :)

    Sounds like you need a new transaxle! How many miles/km? And has the trans ever been serviced?

    Will get all the answers tomorrow i hope, but will the trans-axle cause the engine to not run at all?
    Currently at 260 000 km.

    the tranny is needed to turn the engine over. there is no other starter motor

    Update:
    I checked the petrol engine. When trying to start it, the crankshaft turns for some time then it is stopped and you can hear the electric motor(MG1) run freely(spins up). Is this normal for this car or the crankshaft should always turn?
    Are there any known cases of breakage of clutch disk or petrol engine crankshaft that could cause the car to act like that?

    Be careful you don't run down the HV battery trying to start the car repeatedly.

    Have you had a chance to pull the subcodes (INFs) for that DTC P0A90?

    doesn't sound right, definitely unusual. i'm not sure of the exact connection between the engine and tranny. you can find some mock ups and cutaways of the whole thing on line. there is no clutch from what i understand.

    Broken chain in the trans.

    Dump the fluid to confirm should be a lot of metal stuck to the magnet. A trans that was used and abused.

    Not serviceable to most mortals needs a new trans.
