GS Yuasa's new battery to double electric car range- Nikkei Asian Review
"Japan's GS Yuasa will begin mass producing as early as 2020 lithium-ion batteries that double the driving range of small electric vehicles.

Lithium Energy Japan, a joint venture with trading house Mitsubishi Corp. and carmaker Mitsubishi Motors, will develop the cells, which will be produced at its plant in Shiga Prefecture and supplied to automakers in Japan and Europe."

No mention of cost for these new batteries, but Nissan controls Mitisubishi, and they are selling off their in house battery production.

too small for significant sales in this country, but should allow larger vehicle improvements down the road.
still, more hype until we see it. like toyota's 'solid battery'.

Likely why it is going to Japan and Europe first. Small cars will see better benefit with the more limited space for a battery, and small cars sell better in those markets.

Announcing the move to mass production sounds more hopeful than 'our battery can do this'.

If these batteries pan out, will the "I need 500 miles of range" people finally be happy?

i will be.(y) more evse stations vs longer battery range, they'll eventually meet somewhere in the middle.

Only if you can charge them in a half hour or less.... ;)
If you determine how far the average person drives on a long trip, in a day and meet that goal (or recharge in a half hour or less) then that will finally slay the range anxiety dragon.

Nissan's next leaf will be out soon.
The real-world range will be about a buck forty, BUT........the real-world street price will be about $5k less than a car with more adequate range. As a bonus, it will look more like a Sentra than an in-your-face BEV.
This will place the new Nissan close to the <$15k class of vehicle, which will give urbanites pause to consider one.

    EVs are getting there.
When they can survive without the kickbacks......they will have arrived.

Or the production may happen as late as.......NEVER.......if the development doesn't work out like they hope.
We've heard things like this before.......several times.
I think this easily qualifies as "fake news".

Not much technical information. Fake news is pretty harsh...maybe vaporware is more descriptive.

Why is Nissan selling off their in house battery production?
I know there can be multiple, unrelated reasons, but it is an odd move. With Tesla, Nissan was the only company serious about BEVs. What advantage does selling their own battery production give them in the goal of selling BEVs?
