Why not just buy a proven Plugin Kit. Or trade for a PIP.
These are proven add ons. You are the perfect candidate for it.
You can't parallel two stock battery packs.
And sitting there waiting for the HV battery to charge does not make sense. What a waste of gas and pollution.
Just drive the car normally. The system will take care of the HV battery as required.
Use gas only to make your car move.

It would probably cost you $5-8K to add a pack that gets you a few extra EV miles... and it would most likely prove very unreliable at the very least.
If you don't want any issues- trade in for a proven PIP. In stop and go driving you should get 12+ EV miles without ever having the ICE start- and the PIP can go up to 62-64mph without the ICE firing up.

No doubt the PIP makes sense but I'm not in be market for a new car yet and they don't even sell them in FL yet.

Truth is I'm a modder at heart! The factory tunes for warranty and the masses, I like to mod and tune for my specific needs. Been flashing my computer in my Vette for 7 years now, scanning and flashing and incrementally increasing performance.

Keep the ideas coming please. I'd be surprised is someone hasn't at least tried doubling the battery capacity. Could have used it today, 6-7 miles of crawling due to a wreck. Ran the battery dry after 2 miles then had to feel the engine running for 10 minutes charging the battery back up wasting fuel. Watched my mpg go from 61.1 to 60 during that stretch.

Obviously my idea doesn't make financial sense but that hasn't stopped me from modding before.

Bill, thank you so much. This is the post I have been hoping would arrive.

Perfect! Just what I needed to know and my search failed.

    Thank you!

Difficult to understand. Electronic only Gen 3 bat match Gen 2 system plug and go. No interest in appearances, connectors, philosophy, nonsense such [You will need custom electronics since the system is designed for a specific size battery. Not an easy job.]
