This morning our 2012 Plug in appeared to turn itself on with no key or person initiating it. There seem to be some reports of 2010 cars doing this but none for the plug in versions. The dealership says this has never happened and want to keep the car to monitor it until it happens again.... of course since is the first time we have noticed it in 2.5 years that might take a while. The possibility of not turning it off and human error seems like a comforting solution but we have not done that before and it doesn't alleviate our worries that this could happen again. Anyone else have this problem?

Over the past 2.5 years, I haven't had this happen. I can tell you that more than a handful of times I've forgotten to turn the car off. This is why I do not use the Park button. I only use the Power button to shut off the car. If I forget to turn off the car, it will lurch forward immediately, prompting me to shut off the car. If I use Park and forget to press Power then nothing happens and I walk away from a car left on.

if you leave the car on, shut the door and walk away, it only beeps 3 times. there have been many reports of forgetting to turn it off, but i don't recall anyone having it turn on by itself, just those who won't admit leaving it on.

One time I found my Prius trying to run away with another Prius one to the park......I can't imagine what could ever happen if not caught it on time.

No. But it's the most likely answer (human error). I've seen this or similar events (rear hatch opening, doors locking, all windows rolling down, etc) reported on many forums plus I've personally BTDT (usually the panic alarm......)

The OP should try to sell the car on ebay. Unknown to him he got a special car that has the beta version of the new autonomous driving software installed. The car is supposed to start itself then drive to go pick up the owner. He forgot to set the destination in the Nav, so it just sat there.

Self-starting cars are by definition a turn on.

The car can lock remotely, can start the AC remotely, why shouldn't it be able to turn on remotely? All you need to do is foll the car that the brake and the power button is pressed.
KITT could do it in the 80's, surely Toyota have made this feature available to the general public? ;)

Wasn't "self-starter" a popular expression in help wanted ads?

Back in the day, yes. Today, the likely response would be, "Help wanted ad? What's that?" :)
