I just recently bought a used Prius and I am really starting to worry and maybe even regret my purchase as I cannot find how to fix these problems. I just tried to get my car inspected to have it registered and it failed on many accounts. Some of the things it failed on I can understand but other things seem to be more unfixable or it may cost so much money I will not have a car at all anymore.

The things it failed on are:
Dashboard lights not working (that front speedometer computer)
    Headlight working intermittently
    Neutral safety switch not engaging

    Pulling alignment
    Right rear strut blown
    Poly rib belt cracking
    Water pump drive belt cracking

I know every now and then I'd say once every two weeks the front speedometer will go completely dark and of course since the car need that to pass, it didn't work. I've done the simple unplug from battery reset but I would like to permanently fix it and not be doomed to pay over $1,000 on repairs on it. My center console computer also doesn't work and i was wondering if there may be some way to fix that without going to a salvage yard. And I'm also wondering what the hell that damn triangle means? it only comes on for me when I go a little quick around a left turn. I've already dumped $800 dollars on this car to fix both the struts and get the belts replaced and alignment done. I really don't want to pay $600 just for them to pull apart my dash and look at my electrical to tell me a problem and then charge more on fixing the damn thing. I really need to know if there is any way i can fix the underlined things on that list? The non-underlined things are already being replaced.

I am 17 years old and any money I can save would be a life line. I am quite competent on how to do electric work, programming, and mechanical fixes. I could easily solder things and re-attach wires. I just have no clue on what to fix. Please someone help :(

    I have a 2004 Prius with 181,000 miles.

Dashboard lights not working (that front speedometer computer) - replace with refurbished "combination meter", around $150
Headlight working intermittently - Change the light bulbs
Neutral safety switch not engaging - not sure what this is
Pulling alignment - get the car aligned
Right rear strut blown - change the strut
Poly rib belt cracking - change the belt
Water pump drive belt cracking - this is the same belt as above

It's really not that bad at all, very minor. I would say most 13 year old cars would have more problems than what you're seeing here.

Wait til you get a hv battery failure, then you'll really regret it

I've got the struts replaced and the alignment and the belts done. I'm more concerned with how the hell to fix the Neutral safety switch. Being its a Maryland safety standard I have no clue what this thing is and why it wouldn't work. All of these things are simple enough but adding in the fact this is my only work car and all this needs to work for inspection means i cannot make any more money and saving up for car problems is put to a halt. I also make minimum wage so yeah. :/
what the hell is a neutral safety switch...
I'll get a new combination meter and new headlights in the meantime.

to engage the car into "neutral", you would have to hold the lever for about 1 second. If you don't, it probably won't go into neutral.

You think I should tell the people inspecting the car about this?

You can't be serious you are regretting a $1000 purchase? That's a beauty

I'm on the fence I guess it's because I've never been around a hybrid ever before. I do like the car a lot and I really hope I don't have to repair it over and over. It's my second car. The first one pooped out real fast so I'm hesitant over cars.

Haha yeah I got a real beefcake car, should get women in bathing suits to pose around it.
But all jokes aside I'm pretty amazed by this car. I need it to last me a couple years only before I move out of country.

If you want it to last 2 years.....assuming the hv battery is still original from 2004, you should NEVER let that car sit for more than 2 days without driving it. EVER

Or if you are still regretting the purchase, drive it to me in Los Angeles and I'll pay you $1500

When did you last check the engine oil level? A low level is a likely reason for the master warning red triangle to come on as you make a turn.

Would it be okay if I at least turned the car on every day? Or should I take it around the block daily? Walking my car haha.

As Patrick mentioned, check the oil and add as needed.

You need to drive the car so the weak old battery doesn't self discharge and go out of balance.

This would not be a problem if you had a newer battery. But your battery is probably 13 years old

Just got the oil done this morning since the car is in the shop getting the struts replaced and the belts too. Hopefully that'll work.
