Thought someone might be interested it this.

[ Haven't actually ran this app, and don't know what permissions are required to run it ]

The Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI), is a non-profit, free software project that aims to increase transparency of internet censorship and net neutrality violations around the world. They have developed an app called OONI Probe, that lets you use your phone to identify and track your ISP’s net neutrality violations.

    By running OONI Probe, you:

    • ‍Measure the speed and performance of your network
    • ‍Measure video streaming performance
    • ‍Check whether and how websites are blocked
    • ‍Find systems that could be responsible for censorship or surveillance
Once you have run tests, you will be able to view the results directly in the app. All network measurement data will also be published, increasing transparency of potential net neutrality violations.

OONI can help us find net neutrality violations, but they need more people to install the app and run tests! Head over to Catch net neutrality violations & stop censorship. to download the app, and for more info.

I suspect it is automatic along with usernames and passwords.

There are risks. Running a probe involves testing connections to websites that may be banned and using tools to attempt circumventing web censorship. It is not designed to protect the privacy of those running probes. Measurements are published and can include IP addresses or other identifying information.

Really, Skynet gets mad when someone is watching???? Oooh...that can't be good!

So how is a provider going to be held liable for something that has been repealed? From what I understand, they will have the ability to slow data, and even prevent some websites from being accessed. So what's the point of doing something to help these guys out which in the end won't help anyone.

And if this is relatively new, it might be a complete SCAM.
The "target" might really be YOU.

The idea is to make their actions public, since it might not always be obvious what they are doing, and to apply "market" pressure to get them to stop doing it.

Probably an exercise in futility even if it does work as advertised.

A retired, network engineer I implemented Quality of Service (QoS) in the past:
    1. Network management - low volume but critical for inband control. Out of band is via a separate network or the policy of the wise.
    2. Real-time - voice or customer time critical traffic
    3. Near real-time - video
    4. Everything else - web, email, EBay e.t.c.
Unless you have packet timing information and understand typical traffic patterns, an end user is going to have a hard time detecting much less deciphering traffic management.

Of course all bets are off if some management stupidly presents a new charge. The bill for extra access would be proof enough.

But isn't that the REAL purpose for the recent rule change......as even stated by some in the industry with a VERY thin veil over it ??
Allow the big companies to make MORE MONEY, MORE, MORE, MORE.
And the only real way to do that is to take more money from it's customers.

This is the reverse of "trickle down".

    hmmmm....
Maybe I'll try it on my company phone......

    not.
I tried to explain QoS to some lib friends who are convinced that the internet will come to a shuttering stop now that lawlessness has broken out on the internet and we're going to be paying $500 a month for dial-up again....

We agreed in the end to just eat birthday cake and enjoy the party... ;)
