So I have had my 2005 Prius for over a year now. I love my car but after 7 months it made a whining noise coming from by the pulley. When I would accelerate the noise would get worse. Engine light came on tested and said loss of power. The car would not go up large hills it was gutless. So I parked it. I recently just replaced the pulley and now the noise is gone. I have been driving it short distances and at about 30 miles per hour the car would sputter and hesitate. I would let off the gas and push down on gas pedal lighter and it would go fine. Can't afford to take it to dealer they are a joke. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks

    1. how many miles are on your car?
    2. what maintenance items have you performed/replaced on the car?

Have Only replaced pulley by water pump. Battery was replaced by seller 13 months ago. Have only put 12,000 miles since purchased 13 months ago. I don't know anything else, I am pretty sure my husband has did 2 oil changes.

Do you still have the engine warning lights on now?

Just check engine. I have checked the 12v battery also it's still good.

you need to read codes. 4 choices (not counting dealer):
    1. Auto parts store (not particularly reliable, but okay in a pinch).
    2. bluetooth OBDII reader from Amazon for $12 and Torque Pro for Android $6.
    3. wifi OBDII reader from Amazon for $20 and OBDFusion for iPhone $9
    4. MiniVCI for $30 and you provide a windows 32-bit laptop on which to run it - this gives you the same diagnostic capabilities as the dealership.
Without reading codes, we are just guessing. The car is trying to tell you what's wrong. Please listen.

EDIT: Also, without LOAD TESTING the 12V, you can't be 100% confident it is good. If it's sitting at 12.6V or higher overnight (measured at the battery or jumper connections with everything off, then it's probably good. Otherwise, it's a guess without a load test.

If you can get the codes read on the car, it'll give you the exact problem code to pinpoint your problem. It should be emissions related

If I had to just guess, it would be the following items:

    1. bad catalytic converter
    2. bad spark plugs
    3. check engine air filter
    4. bad gas in tank
    5. bad fuel injector

while you're checking everything, make sure you check the oil level frequently as the prius cars burn oil at higher mileage

    Good Luck.
I agree the best starting point is getting the codes read.

Gutless, sputtering, and hesitating seem to be the primary symptoms you have now. I'm not going to speculate as to what that might be tied to being as there are so many things that could lead to those symptoms.

Hopefully, the codes lead you to a simple and economically frugal solution.

Ok I found the auto scanner we have and the codes were, p0102 and po113. Come to find out the mass airflow sensor was unplugged. Oops...
So I plugged it back in and took it for a drive and it drove fine.

Thank you everybody for your input. I had no idea what I was doing and I took a shot at it. I am so happy I fixed it myself. Have a great day.

This thread also highlights the need for having the error code.
Just knowing the light is on, and trying to remotely diagnose can be a total shot in the dark.

Once the code was available it was much easier to diagnose.
