    We've been discussing hybrid vs PHEV vs BEV and here is an excellent Toyota hybrid example:


    No, I'm not tempted as much as admire what Toyota has accomplished. It is a big car with ICE Camry mileage.

    But it's a lot smaller than a Camry - RAV4 is 4600 mm long vs 4905 mm for Camry - one of them will fit in my garage, the other won't.

    And far, far better economy than a Camry ICE:

    4.5 litres/100km - Camry Hybrid (needs 95RON)
    4.8 litres/100km - RAV4 Hybrid - only needs 91 RON
    8.3 litres/100km - Camry ICE - only needs 91 RON

    The Highlander Hybrid (Hy Hi or Hi Hy that he’s talking about) is much longer than the Camry Hybrid about 102mm (4 inches) longer. The biggest difference between the 2020 Hi Hy and the 2019 Hi Hy is they dropped the 3.5L V6 in favor of the 2.5L I4. So total HP dropped from 306 to 240 HP. MPG went from 28 to 34 combined (comparing Limited Platinum to Limited Platinum).

    Heck our Prime is longer than the RAV4 Hybrid by 2 inches (51mm).

    Ahhh - I think that's what TOYOTA call the Klugger here - and supposed to be hybrid released next year. And yes, it's quite big.

    Yeah, 33-34 mpg for mid size SUV is impressive, but for a price. I looked for used HiHy to replace our Sienna, but couldn't find any reasonably priced one. The price on the brand new HiHy was totally out of reach for us. Ended up picking up 5 years old used Pathfinder Hybrid which gets 30 mpg on highway (if no AC or heat), and cost 1/4 of new HiHy. I will pay bit more on gas but saved a bundle.

    I wonder what is the towing cap for 2020 HiHy???

    he commented 33/34 blended epa.
    Nice soft leather
    Great power
    Torque vectoring & (option) AWD
    Not so great Takeaway -
    small 3rd row
    Rear storage - small when 3rd row seating used.
    Observations - he says it takes a model X to get better EPA. Nope. That's why we got the Pacifica plug-in {33 EV range). EPA 84MPGe & blended 32/33MPG charge sustain mode. And being a minivan - a ton more room, both 3rd row & rear storage.
    He played up the 360° camera view, which is great, but not new. Some vehicles already had it for years. (& our Pacifica)

    The manufacturers must buy the 360° units from the same source as the screens all look identical. Next - the backhanded compliment when he said the hihy's stepped up-luxurious interior means hihy is catching up to Kia Hyundai. Ouch.
    All in all - very nice .... who ever thought Toyota would be tipping the $50K scale, after prep, sales tax & delivery.

    Agreed - Minivans are a far more practical proposition, and generally a better drive. I've owned 3 in the last 45 yrs.

    This hi-hy has so many features, it's going to be hard to justify the sister vehicle - the hybrid RX Lexus SUV - which typically cost thousands more. They'll have to make it plug in

    The previous Highlander never appealed because anything with sub-30 MPG made no sense. Given the more optimum hybrid system, it looks to be much more practical. But he mentions being on embargo so we'll get the rest in a week.

    Nah, the Lexus crowd gets to keep the 3.5L V6 in the RXh versus the Hi Hy’s 2.5L. This will become a plug-in when they have Solid State batteries.

    Without AWD, zero.

    For 2020, they are keeping the RX a power hybrid with the V6. I expect them to continue that if the intent is have a difference.

    Wasn't the hybrid side, it was the use of a more powerful engine.

    I thought all hybrid version of Highlander comes with AWD, or was that only for Rav4 Hybrid? Is there option of non-AWD for HiHy? And for HiHy with AWD, how much towing?

    New for the 2020 Hi Hy, they have a FWD model only in addition to AWD. I believe it will be the LE model.

    it's been that way both offered) since its sister vehicle, the RX Hybrid 1st came out in 2006 (late 2005) . That was our 2nd hybrid vehicle, after the 04 Prius.

    Hummm, eAWD HiHy would surely cost more than $40K... but only 1,750lbs towing cap. If that's the case, I am no longer interested.

    Actually the 2018 and 2019 models are AWD only even in the LE trim.

    Wow! My interest has suddenly shifted. I am trying not to read up on Rav4 PRIME too much. I don't need it right now... BUT I know if I learn too much about it, then I will WANT it.
