LEGAL Chattel Slavery wasn't abolished until after December 1941.
They just slapped a different label onto a different container.....calling it "indentured servitude "or "prison labor," or maybe "debt peonage."

These institutions were sometimes WORSE than chattel slavery, because slave owners didn't get 'free replacement slaves' following a fever outbreak, industrial accident, coal mine explosion, etc...

This practice was ended when one of the most racist, misogynistic, and utterly barbaric military forces attacked the United States (again) in the 1940's.
AND (this part of slavery, at least) was ended BY the same President that overrode the objections of his AG and FBI director and ordered the illegal imprisonment of tens of thousands of ethnic Japanese, many of whom were LEGAL, ACTUAL US Citizens.
