Why? Devil's Advocate has a U-Haul hitch, not a Curt hitch.

For the simple reason that the U-Haul hitch IS the Curt hitch. The same Curt hitch is the one U-Haul carries and installs.

Well I sent a message to Curt, we'll see what the response is. I'll check back in after the 4th.

My mistake. The only picture of a U-Haul hitch on U-Haul's website looked nothing like the Curt hitch.

    The force,

Do you think you could take a temp reading of your exhaust after it is hot and maybe even the exhaust gases coming out and post them for us to see?

    Thanks

I crawled around and took a snappie of my pipe after bending it down. From the photo it doesn't appear as bent as it did when we were under the car on the rack. I hope it's bent enough! (Like the car's owner...)

Huh. Maybe this is why the Toyota engineers did not want a hitch on the car...

Welll... there's no question that they don't want anybody towing with the car, but there is certainly NOTHING complicated about making a hitch work properly with the vehicle. Either design the hitch correctly, or bend the pipe down an inch.... not rocket science.

JB... looks like enough to me. Hard to get a good angle for a photo when the car is on the ground. I probabl did mine TOO much. I dropped it 3/4" below the cross bar, and pointing basically straight down. NONE of that is going to get back up where it doesn't belong. I think I get 5% better gas mileage now too.

    Darelldd,
Sorry to hear about your car. This has me giving a lot of second thought to doing a underbelly mod. If it gets that hot, I wonder if a high temp insulation might do well to be put above the pipe the entire length of it. It might keep the batteries and the car cooler. Were you kidding about the 5% better gas mileage, or were you thinking that would create a venturi affect? Please post a pic of your new tail pipe mod.

    Thanks.

The battery (the ONE battery) shouldn't be effected since it is up inside the car.
Yeah... that's what the little rolleye guy was for. Just a joke about all the discussions that revolve around things that just can't significantly change mileage.

I did a few posts up. Here it is again.

I was reading that the 2006 Prius has "A new front spoiler, which is made of TSOP (Toyota Super Olefin Polymer) that excels in recyclability, has been provided under the front bumper for enhanced appearance." (quote from new features documents from techinfo.toyota.com) I wonder if they now make the rear spoiler out of the same new material, and if this problem could be the result of that change. It seems unlikely that the problem should only start apearing now. (Of course, I do not know when the Curt hitch design went on sale originally, it could just be coincidence.)

Well I received a reply from Curt...

I appreciate you writing to inform us of the issue. We have just recently been informed of the possible side effects of installing the hitch. While we at CURT Mfg. are first and foremost focused on designing a quality hitch to serve the customers needs, I assure you that usability and safety are the first steps in the initial design process. We are currently looking at possible fixes or alterations to the current design and feel we can deal with the issue.
Please let me know if you have other questions or need more information.

    Thank You Again,

    Mike Brunner

Not sure what they plan on doing about it but I told them I bought the hitch at U-haul and Curt didn't say it wasn't their hitch, so I am assuming they did manufacture the hitch. I'll try and get whatever "fix" they come up with. They should at least do that for people who have purchased their hitch.

The more people that write in the better.

Thanks, Devil. I can't help wondering what they now think of their initial reply to me. And if they have sold thousands of these like they say... I wonder if they're just a wee bit worried about the issue being bigger than just me complaining.

Sorry, this shouldn't be happening. I hope that turning the pipe down will work for anyone contemplating a hitch.
