I want to turn my Prius into an emergency generatot by installing a 12v inverter.

The Prius with a 12v inverter, would make a great power source during major power outlets that are caused by storms, etc.

I would like to install a large inverter that can power my refrigerator and other small appliances.

How big of an inverter can I safelly install on my prius to run some of my appliances?

    ***Anybody done this?

Bob Wilson had done this a few years ago.

The most that you should expect is around 1 kW of power from an inverter so you'll need to consider the peak power required when the compressor in the refrigerator starts up.

1 KW is the limit running off of the 12v supply in ready mode. More that that and you risk blowing a Prius fuse.

You can use a 3-5 KW inverter by carefully running off the 200v traction battery (again only in ready mode). Information can be found at: PriUPS-getting electricity FROM your hybrid vehicle
