My 2010 Prius engine blew up and I'm trying really hard to justify the $7,000 cost (more than half of what I paid for my Prius) of a used engine that has 50,000 more miles than my current Prius (100,000). The Toyota dealership told me to give it a few days and think about it.

We talked about new cars but there are none out there. This specific Toyota dealership in the midwest has only received ONE new Prius Prime in the last two years. I am thinking about going back home to Portland, OR where I may have a better chance to secure one because every other car you see is a Prius.

There is no waitlist or anything to sign up for the 2022 Prime. I really don't want to pay above MSRP with companies like CarMax or Carvana... Do I have any other choice?

In the current market you have little choice. Looks like you're pursuing all options I would be pursuing. Just work the internet daily and be willing to travel.

Call around, get a motor from a gen4 use the short block from the Gen4 and the head from your old gen3(maybe get it rebuilt). Will give you the newer gen4 block without most of the issues of gen3

Whole post about it here. Advice on gen 4 engine into gen 3 | PriusChat

Afterwards, you should be able to get a fair bit of $$$ out of your gen 3 and get into a new prius at your leisure.

I think I saw your post on a different sub. Maybe reddit?

I think I suggested calling around for an engine swap. Did you have any luck with getting pricing for that?

It'll definitely be cheaper than new car. And a rebuilt Prius engine will still be strong.

The gen4 block is basically an updated version of the gen3 block. But without most of the issues and it's pretty simply adapted to the gen3's. For those who know what they are buying, they will pay more for it as a result.

Follow the instructions for the block upgrade. It's not too hard from a mechanical perspective as the hardest parts(block, head, transmission) lineup.

No, you can't get a new Prius Prime. You can only get a used Prius Prime. It's the same everywhere in the US.

That said, you can do a 50-state search at cars.com, but chances are that most of them are already reserved. Your best chances are in the East Coast like in New York and Maryland:

    https://www.cars.com/shopping/results/?dealer_id=&keyword=&list_price_max=&list_price_min=&makes[]=toyota&maximum_distance=all&mileage_max=&models[]=toyota-prius_prime&page=1&page_size=20&sort=distance&stock_type=new&year_max=&year_min=&zip=48211

Go to the link above and try calling the dealers shown in Upstate New York. Perhaps you're lucky and they aren't reserved. They are within driving distance from you.

I hope so, too, but I doubt so. Toyota is expecting the supply-chain problems to last for at least through the end of 2023.

Does this mean that I won't be getting the regular "reminders" from my local Toyota dealership about about the great bargains to be had on a new Prime?:)

Consider calling local junkyards for a used motor. They will typically install it for you as well. You shouldn't pay more than 1.5k -2k (otd) for a used engine.

Dealers will charge you up the nose for this stuff....7k is not worth it for a 2010

Check my cars.com link above. A user posted yesterday that he was able to have one shipped from Basil Toyota in six weeks. There are plenty of Prius Primes available for sale in Upstate New York, and you live only a couple of hundred miles away. You can even go there and drive it away yourself.

No, you're not getting out of it that easy. That "Constant Contact" software never stops, never sleeps, doesn't feel fear or pain, has no pity, and knows no mercy.
