How can you tell the difference between HG going or EGR clogged.

A leakdown test should confirm a head gasket failure if you have one. Finding traces of {oil, coolant, combustion products} in the wrong members of {oil, coolant, combustion products} is another common giveaway.

Pulling up the EGR Flow Insufficiency test result in Techstream should give you an idea how clogged the EGR is or isn't.

In the absence of techstream, the Exhaust Gas Recirculation pipe is relatively easy to remove, inspect and clean. If it’s got significant carbon build-up you can rest assured the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve and cooler, and the small diameter Exhaust Gas Recirculation passages in intake manifold, will be similar or worse.

Just assume if you are near 100k miles, your EGR needs cleaning. If you wait on this, you may experience head gasket failure.

You can’t go far wrong if you follow the miles component of engine coolant change interval, for the full Exhaust Gas Recirculation cleaning: first time at 100K, subsequently every 50K. Even better: every 50K from the get go.

I bet the people that told you you were whining are eating their words. We need a class action lawsuit to get Toyota to recall these vehicles. This is ridiculous!
