An engine with this amount of overfill will allow the crankshaft to spin through it in the crankcase. This will cause frothing (air bubbles) and a loss of oil pressure.

I once had one motor that "created" oil. It was a riding lawn mower with a sticking carb float that slowly flowed gas into the cylinder when sitting unused. Slow cranking, massive amounts of blue smoke, and eventual power loss and stalling were the signs. A gallon or more of gassy smelling, thin oil gushing out during the drain was my final clue.

Maybe you aren't reading the dipstick properly. On a Gen III, the only way to get an accurate read is to wait five minutes or more before you pull the dipstick out. If you remove the dipstick, insert and remove it, you won't get an accurate read.

Agreed. The rods will pump air into the oil, raising it's level and flowing it I nto the breather and then the intake. The pressures in the crankcase would rise as the frothy mix fills the crankcase. I think about this as I pour oil in.

i guess because the oil drains down into the pan overnight? so, are you running your car with 6 qts and the oil way up on the dipstick? how far above the full mark?

Most importantly, why is it that I get out only 4.5QTS OUT WHEN CHANGING THE OIL AFTER RUNNING THE MOTOR YET 6QTS OUT AFTER THE CAR SITS OVERNIGHT.

ALSO NOTE THAT THE OIL LEVEL IS HIGH ON THE DIPSTICK WHEN THE CAR SITS OVERNIGHT, YET AT THE FILL LINE WHEN CHECKED MINUTES AFTER RUNNING THE ENGINE.

The level when the car sits overnight is the correct level. Take the reading just once. If you want to check it a second time, wait about five minutes. The oil will collect in the dipstick tube and it gets all over the dipstick, making readings almost impossible.

i believe you. i had the same problem with V6 RAV4. i had a dealership changing the oil at that time (when it was new and i had their $23 oil change coupons) and it always read overfilled later on cold engine when checked a day later (it was my wife's car). i complained to them all the time and they denied overfilling.

later, when i started doing my own changes, I realized that the engine holds about 1.5 qts oil in upper part of the engine, i suspect in the VVT-i system, when you check it immediately after running. this is weird as most car manuals tell you to do it after running, but it was apparently wrong advice in that car, as it takes some time for that oil to drain back.

But, I didn't see that issue in my prius. My advice is put only 4.5qt of oil and check level several hrs after initial run.

also, i have changed oil on cold or lukewarm engines in the past, and even though not optimal, it's not terribly wrong either.

I got a love letter from the Moderator over that. But I couldn't go back and delete it. I'm usually friendly, but several of us find this story a little hard to believe, especially after explanations of how to check the dipstick are ignored.

The OP in another thread has claimed recently that he has the gas pedal welded to the floor for hours at a time exceeding 100+ mph while towing a trailer. So similar situation here.

With this OP, data and supporting information should be presented with a claim.

A picture is worth a thousand words:).

As a person with a Chemical Engineering degree and uses mass and material balances frequently, the idea of creation of material I would love to see video of:). The law of conservation of mass is that mass can neither be created or destroyed, seeing video evidence of such a phenomenon would be worth the thread to disclaim a scientific law.

But I have a feeling we will be waiting a long time for that;)

I've been waiting for somebody to mention the anti drain back valve but as of yet nobody has done so. Instead I get poeple who don't see the Forrest thru the trees making wisecracks. I'm not insulted by those who do because they look ignorant. There are some on this forum that are genuinely helpful. They seem to ask the most insightful questions. I thank those of you who do as this is helpful.

If any of you would like to be helpful...I welcome it. I block all others forever so I don't have to see their posts anywhere ever again. This thins down threads to the few posting members who are:
    1. Most helpful
    2. Usually correct
    3. (This is a given) Not jumping to [wrong] conclusions

Back on point: is there an antidrainback valve and how do I test it if so?

I'm succinct and to the point. Like most threads they quickly ramble into no helpful jibberish. I'm restating the findings differently and succinctly.

Did that engine have a drain back valve in the filter? If so was it rubber on metal or on cardboard?
