You shouldn't have any problems at 66k. and 100,000 to that and big troubles

2015 Prius two with 112K miles. Bought used in 2019 with 59K miles. Oil changes done religiously every 5K. Oil consumption is pretty much non-existent. Cleaned EGR, replaced spark plugs, installed oil catch can & changed engine coolant at 91K. Tires were replaced at 75K. The Yokohama Avid Ascends currently on it are excellent with great durability and gas mileage. Too bad they are now discontinued. I will need to replace them next year, so I'm looking for alternatives.

I haven't inspected the brakes, so I will do that next. I drive to the high desert every weekend, so I am racking up the miles. Excellent car overall. I'm very happy with it!

How did your EGR system look when you cleaned it? My 2015 doesn't consume any oil either. 2019 was a good year to buy your car!

After selling my '07 Prius with 300K miles I'm back in the Prius world having just purchased at 2010 with 181K miles. I don't have any record of maintenance performed other than the motor oil wasn't black. I'm wondering what to start checking.

Start with the EGR system; more info in first link in my signature. If you're on a phone, turning it to landscape orientation will allow you to see signatures.

It was starting to clog up, but not severely. It was a great time to do it according to the folks a Hybrid Pit. Glad I did!

And yes, the timing was perfect when I bought it. Gas prices were low and so were used cars at the time, specially hybrids. I bought it for around $12K, cash. I wouldn't be able to afford it at todays inflated prices!

…and mine is a late 2015 model built in September of 2015, one of the last built. I think by then they had pretty much ironed out all the bugs.

Those of you who've changed the plugs on your Gen 3, did you replace the coils at the same time? Wondering what the service life of a coil is. No symptoms.

If you've had no problems, no need to replace them.

Will your Prius let you know if there is a problem via dashboard lights? Basically, is this car smart enough to tell me it's sick no matter how small the problem may be?

    150k miles, 2010,
Cleaned egr, transmission fluid change, oil catch can install, new PCR valve, changed brake accumulator and actuator, changed suspension to koni fsd, trd springs, trd rear sway, inverter fluid change, brake fluid flush and change, changed front sway bar links oem, new plugs.

car will need new hv battery, and head gasket probably at some point, it has some cold start rattle but it’s minor enough for now.

Did you do the accumulator / actuator job yourself? That looks like an expensive PITA.

yes see above i bought it used on ebay for 214, watched some youtube vid that explained how to do it, but even after you install it, you need to bleed the brakes and use tech stream, use a good obd2 dongle like tactrix. yea i guess its a pita, but not too bad?

No. It does monitor a whole lot of things, so it can tell you about a whole lot of problems, and that's a huge advance over older cars that couldn't tell you such things. But it can only monitor the things it has sensors for, and it can only detect problems if the engineers thought of those problems and thought of ways to catch them based on sensor readings, and only if it was deemed cost-effective to include a sensor for that and the necessary computer code to catch the problem.

So, you can have various different kinds of problem:

    • Things the car notices and tells you about before you notice anything
    • Things you notice before the car notices anything
    • Things you notice, and the car has noticed something, and the something doesn't directly tell you what the problem is, but might give you useful clues when you look in the repair manual to see how that code is detected.

So the car has sensors for all the major things that can leave me stranded? Since it has less moving parts, it's less likely to have the same issues as other cars so I am hoping if the car is sick, it will flash the appropriate lights to let me know it needs help. Is there a general consensus as to well you should have the car checked for any stuff the car can't detect itself? Like at 100,000 miles, do I have to check like a certain fluid that isn't checked during an oil change? I basically want to make sure something wrong with the car doesn't go ignored.

I wouldn't say I've seen any reason to assume that.

The car is instrumented in ways that can, often, when a problem crops up, save a lot of time in diagnosing it.

To assume that means the instrumentation will be able to warn you of any potentially serious problem seems like a stretch, though.
