How many miles to expect on 2006 Prius

You for sure will need another hybrid battery soon, unless it's already been replaced by Toyota. Any other replacement from rebuilding sources, will not last.

The car can go 200k, but how many parts you'll need on the way, nobody will know

 

If there isn't anything wrong with the car, it's very likely that it will make it to 200K miles without expensive repairs but............

The HV battery is always a big question mark and considering that the Prius is nearly 11 years old it's very likely that it will fail before 200K so you need to be prepared for that inevitable expense when it occurs. DIY repairs can be done for less than $100 if it's only a couple failed modules. Hiring someone to repair it will cost $500 to $750. A ready to drop in re-manufactured battery with used modules go for $1100 to $1600. A new battery will cost $2300 to $3500 depending on whether or not you install it or have a stealership do it.

You don't mention what the seller wants for it. I would start negotiations at $4000 and offer no more than $4750.

 

welcome! the odds are in your favor, but there are always cases of expensive repairs, so you have to go in with your eyes open. same with any car, but hybrids have a few extra expensive components. all the best!

 

Buy it if it's the right price and it passes a shop inspection. Ours was going strong at 212,000 with no need to replace the main batteries. In fact, the only thing we had to repair was a front wheel bearing in that time. No rust and we live in Wisconsin. Most reliable car we've ever owned.

 

That's great in your experience but if the OP takes 5 years to reach 200K miles, his Prius will be 16 years old. Your car is about 8 years old so this is not an apples to apples comparison - not that you meant to compare it directly I'm sure. My Prius reached the 200K mile mark in July 2013 so it was only 8 years and 4 months old at the time with the original HV battery. Still has the original HV battery after 255K miles after 11.5 years.

 

the people who's batteries went bad after the warranty ran out don't tend to post in these threads.

 

They don't? How about the thread started by ryousideways - Gen II Prius Individual Battery Module Replacement. His Prius was 14K miles outside of warranty and he mentioned that his HV battery "went bad". In fact, many people have posted when their HV batteries had issues that required repairs or replacement beyond warranty.

 

I hate to say it but, I see and hear about a lot of 2006 hybrid batteries failing. I would expect it to fail soon. The older 2004 and 5's seem to last a long time. I've been observing this for years now. Many 2006 fail, not sure why. I even found some data observing this as well (I was glad to know I wasn't the only one noticing this!) I'd like to find this study again

 

exactly. they post in the complaint, education and repair threads, but when someone posts a 'how long will a prius last' thread, the fortunate ones come out of the woodwork to brag.

I echo the comments about the chances of expensive repairs, including possibly needing a new HV battery. My 06 only has under 78K miles and it mostly sits now since my Leaf is my primary driver. It'd have another ~37K or 38K miles on it if I didn't have a Leaf or some other car....

 

The OP doesn't mention the price but if it's accident free, it's definitely worthy, as mentioned, plan on a new traction battery, 2500$, and now its good for another 150,000-200,000 thousand, as everything else on the car is good to go.

 

06 with only 47k miles and failed HV battery (out of warranty). OP needs to find out the history on the car for a better understanding of what will be needed in the future. Enter the VIN here to find out what's been done by Toyota dealers: Toyota Owners Official Web Site

 

I have a little over 250,000 miles and did just have to replace the HV battery.

Paid 3K$ for the car and the battery cost $3,000 as well. Still big time worth it. Great car! (IMHO)

 

At 106k miles, I wouldn't worry about the battery. I'd worry about the asking price. That's really low mileage for a 10 year old car. But it's still a 10 year old car with lots of things that will break. If I am going to buy a $7000 Prius, (I'm guessing that's the asking price), I'd rather get a newer one.
