Personally I think the existing range is fine. Im 60% ev and would likely only get to 75 with double range. I realize that everyone's situation with City versus Highway ratio and distances are different. I'm not going to inconvenience the fam charging on out of town trips, it's why I have an ICE. It saves time. Won't go full EV until charging networks dramatically improve. Yes, chicken and egg. If anything I would ask for better battery placement, not range, at the next spin.

it is a very personal thing, usually based on commute, but for people who want more miles, how much are they willing to pay?

$6000 for 100 miles of range. Personally I can afford that.

Some States are talking about, or have, increased the registration fees for various EV / hybrid vehicles to make sure we pay “our fair share” of taxes. I hate to say this, but at some point, when EVs become mainstream road taxes will have to be rethought.

Ideally roads will be paid for by how much wear a vehicle causes the old road.
I am paying a $75 dollar hybrid tax in MS, if I were electric, $150

Road taxes are already being rethought, in a process that started more than a decade ago. That is why some people are already paying hybrid or EV taxes, and others are testing odometer- or GPS-based fees.

you either want to promote renewables or you don't. it has nothing to do with paying for roads. bi-polar politics.

Well...the hybrid thing improved my mpg considerably or over a same motored Corolla, but until the EV infrastructure and "time to refill" things get fixed...we'll settle just for a Prius and a RAV4 HV in this household.

Ditto x 2. I tried for a bolt, but other half was too scared and didn’t “see the need” for an all electric vehicle. Now with the prime we both love all electric driving. More range would be nice but what we get is sufficient for now.

    Indiana charges $ 50 for a hybrid and $150 for a EV.
But why do I have to pay road tax on fuel for my lawnmower?
I spend more on lawnmower gas than my Prius.
I haven't filled up my Prius since Sept. 3rd.

Why do you still have a gas burning lawnmower? Retiring one of those clears the air of a HUGE list of garbage, much more than what you get from electrifying your transportation.

    (1) get a diesel lawnmower, and fill it with off-road fuel, sold wherever agricultural and heavy equipment fuels are supplied. It is a separate bank of pumps from the on-road fuel, and is dyed to provide clues for catching cheaters who are supposed to use clear un-dyed road-taxed fuels.

    (2) for gasoline, install a separate storage tank on your property, and have if filled by a delivery truck from an agricultural supply warehouse. Expect a delivery charge if not buying a certain minimum order. Or keep track of your off-road equipment fuel use, and file for a refund from the tax authorities.

Beware that there are tax forms and paperwork and rules involved, and possibly some legal requirements for who is allowed to do this at all. My dad does it, but his 'lawn' is over 100 acres, and his 'lawnmowers' can rapidly cut grass 6 feet tall, in swaths 7 to 14 feet wide per pass. And the cuttings are used to feed farm animals.

Most folks with lawns of typical size for suburban homes, will likely find these choices not worth the costs and hassles. I use a corded electric lawnmower for my yard.

    I want:
    1. liquid cooled, active battery thermal management (DO IT RIGHT!)
    2. fast DC charger plug, +100kW (prefer licensed SuperCharger)
    3. 40A, 240VAC rated charger with display of voltage, current, kWh, and estimated range
    4. 2170 or 18650 cells formed in 4 or 8 pie-shaped, modules in a pack fitting in the spare tire well
    5. more aggressive EV acceleration at speeds under 45 mph ... 7-8 seconds to 60 mph
    6. optional - second pack under rear seat (alternating the pie-shaped modules to make a linear assembly)

The Koch bros have done a good job making people think they aren’t paying their fair share via their lobbying efforts from 2003 onwards to tax hybrid and plug ins...

They could start by closing loopholes that make commercial vehicles tax exempt.
(You know the vehicles that actually damage roads)
Taxis and cement trucks are out and out road tax exempt, semis just write off road tax paying basically nill.

This could reign in environmentally wasteful business models like Amazon Prime as well moving freight back to rail where it belongs

Wisconsin Electric Vehicle Tax - 300MPG.org

But you never hear talking heads complaining about semis writing off road tax do you?

    Offer the following suggestion:
    • make the hybrid tax a per wheel tax for any vehicle
      • trailers would be road taxed
      • motor cycles would have the lowest
      • four wheel, ordinary vehicles
      • scale increases by the number of wheels
    • cut the gas tax in half
      • neighboring state drivers will buy local to get a good price
      • the wheel tax insures a constant revenue stream

I would definitely like to have more EV range, on the order of 50 miles or so. Agreed on the smoothness and refinement of EV operation, although the biggest benefit is that I can effortlessly keep up with traffic at stoplights in EV mode. In ICE mode, the Prime still needs to be one of the slowest accelerating cars on the road (unless I floor the gas and have to listen to the loud vacuum cleaner sound of the engine). Still love the Prime, except for the cargo capacity and EV range.

The classic problem with wheel and tire taxes is that people try to use fewer of them in response, which shows up in accident statistics. Businesses run their trucks with one axle too few for the load, or in the case of tire taxes, the tires are left to wear dangerously low before replacement.

I'm not saying we shouldn't do a wheel tax- I like it for other reasons. I'm just pointing out one of the problems it is bound to create so we can discuss them too.

Kids, kids, kids!! The promise of the new generation of solid state batteries may answer all our needs: much greater range for given size, quicker charging, AND lower price. They're all talking about 2020 as the year this should happen. Imagine a Prime (coupe?!) with 70 miles EV, and gasoline too! Hang on to your shorts, it's getting exciting!!
