Don't know if this would be in the works or not but what about an EV only Prius? Say something in the 60 kWh range? With the efficiency I get with my Prime we're talking in the 280-330 miles range. That would be really cool.

How do you get "paying basically nil" from a write-off?

My understanding is that it is the difference between paying something with after-tax vs before-tax dollars, so a write-off just applies a discount equal to the corporate income tax rate. A year ago, that rate maxed at 35%, now it is just 21%.

Even at the old 35% rate, that isn't enough discount to make the cost anywhere near 'nil'.

Federal tax isn’t the only tax, state is as well.

    ?
Trucking is heavily subsidized, all costs can be written off, from shoes to food to everything else, including the whole cost of fuel, tax and all . Further truckers can take a stock tax deduction of over 50 cents a mile.

Fuel tax is under 16% in my area so just writing off fuel costs rebates the entirety of the road tax.

State tax rates are almost always less than federal tax rates, so the same principle applies.
Do remember that business income tax is a tax on income, or profit, not on gross revenue. Most costs of doing business are subtracted from gross revenue before figuring that income. The cost of fuel, including the road tax, is very clearly one of those costs of doing business.

Absent such deductions, they'd be paying income tax on the fuel tax they paid. Do this on enough things, and in some circumstances, a money-losing business can still owe substantial income tax on non-existent profits.
Not being a trucker, I don't know about any double-dipping that might be legal (*). Normally, double-dip deductions would not be allowed, i.e. deduct either a standard amount, or actual cost, but not both.

(*) Just because one particular businessperson says it is OK, doesn't mean it really is. E.g. dad misunderstood some farm rules, so did both expensing and depreciating on the same item. When sis took over the tax prep and accounting, she put an immediate stop to that. Fortunately the statute of limitations is long since past.

Was asked what I would pay. $6000 more for 100 miles of range on the Prime Advanced is what I would pay.

Changes to car and suspension would be needed but doable.

Great question. I had a Chevy Volt, the EV range was great, but the overall gas mileage was worse than the prime. The Volt is also smaller, more expensive, and harder to get in and out of. The back seat is laughable. the back seat may seat 3, but not comfortably. The Volt also malfunctioned in the Winter( I'm in Michigan). The electronics would go crazy the minute the temperature dropped. Overall, I actually liked the car for my commute. We disliked it for road trips. I had to sit in the back once, it was cramped and I hated it, even for a short trip.

Now, my Prime. I've had it 3 weeks and I LOVE this car. Yes, more electric range would be nice, but I feel the features outweigh that. I drove it home 500 miles from the dealership, no complaints from anyone. I sat in the back, happily. It's a Toyota! Reliable, trustworthy. I wanted a Tesla Model 3, but if it needs repair, I don't have 3 months to wait. Where is the nearest Tesla repair shop???Do you know? Plus, they are only making the $49,000 versions. The promised $35,000 model is not a overall good choice for me anyway. My commute is 72 miles each way, overall the gas savings are 1/3 of what I was paying. We all want more, I'm sure there is a reason and things Toyota has not worked out to delivered more range. In a couple of years I will trade up for a new model, for now I accept the choice I made and my wallet thanks me.

there's one 7 miles from me

no doubt toyota feels more range would be quite expensive, seeing they could barely fit an 8 kWh battery in it.
i believe they see low cost the only way to sell it.

    Bisco! Long time no see.
Just passed on a new Prime in favor of a '12 PiP Advanced with 32K miles. So far Love it, but yeah, the 10 mile (at best) EV range is a bit skimpy.

Well, many readers will recognize that I did want more EV mileage ;)
For our second car, sometime in the future, a 26 EV mile range may work for us as long as you get rid of the toxic ICE:eek:

I think it’s important to remember the engine should be used every now and then. The owner’s manual mentions the risk of fuel problems if not used for too long — and I’ve seen an article or two about plug-in owners that had their gasoline go bad after sitting in the tank for more than a more year. While I do enjoy whispering around without ICE, I’m glad the range is short enough that I’ll have to tank up every month or two...

Agree. A road trip once or twice a year to use up the fuel is a good thing. I mean, that's only 43 litres per tank; not a lot for an entire year.

Also, use winter as an opportunity to use up the fuel.

With the larger tax credit, isn't the Volt about the same price as a Prime?

Add the TSS-P equivalent to the Volt.

Operating cost may be higher, depending upon usage, since Prime is more efficient with both EV & HV operation.
