The last tip I gave the the service adviser was, "The Prius doesn't take 5 quarts."

I have yet to have the same service writer twice on my visits (7) to the dealer -- and they do not seem to do all that much to encourage otherwise.

On the other hand, my wife gave a box of Christmas cookies to her service writer at VW for her Passat because she thought he went out of his way to provide extraoridinary service (he did!) and he seemed very pleased by the gesture.

That insane Doc fee in Georgia ought to cover any tipping, etc.

Ditto, A salesman can make as much on a good review as he can on a deal. Always fill out those customer sat. surveys from Toyota, they take that stuff $eriou$ly.

I suppose the reason I didn't bite was because I DID try to show appreciation once by comp'ing the guy a couple Disney Passes after getting some free work out of him, and he nervously declined ... almost as though there was CCTV watching us. He said it's not allowed. So much for the $100 statement. But maybe your guy is a 'rulebender'?

I swear that some advisors work on commission. When the car is out of warranty they find all kinds of things wrong or that should be replaced. I see a lot of people talked into things they just don't need.

I had a Jeep and they were the worst, under warranty if I noticed that something was not right their favorite saying was "thats the way they all are".

We are fortunate to have a very good Toyota dealer and service department.

writers and techs are paid commission. techs get a flat rate pay- they make x dollars per hour of labor they bill out. i don't know what the advisors get, but it's related to what their team of techs end up doing on a customer's car.

in many cases, the techs (and therefore writers) get really, really hosed on warranty work. (think 0.7 hours for a job that involves opening the battery case.) maintenance and out of warranty repairs are where the money is, and they will upsell that stuff. DH is honest about it and won't sell something he can't justify. honest techs do not make a lot of money, let's just say.

This explains why the number of hours alleged to have been used for the repair always seems higher than expected by the customer.

Could mpgFanatic tell us who else he tips? The doctor? the dentist? the bank manager? the check-out people who add up his grocery bill? Any other?

And could he say what his total expenditure is on all tipping in a year?

And whether he himself receives any tips in his occupation, whatever it is?

    Just idle curiosity.

When I had my Ford Explorer the AC unit failed. The service advisor called me and gave an estimate, I told him I purchased the extended warranty, he said OK. When I went to pick it up another advisor wrote it up and charged me over $850.00 for the repair. I told him I had the extended warranty, he checked and said sorry. He rewrote the statement and I had to sign for them to be reimbursed. The total cost $510.00!!! It is very hard not to be ripped off.

In Japan it is customary to tip one's surgeon (unless, I assume, the surgery does not go well!) So I guess it's not much different to tip the person who works on your car!

I realize that this is in jest, but I do give my service advisors a $50 AMEX gift card for the holidays.

It never hurts to build a relationship with someone if you are going to be using them a lot. My tip to the advisor is "buy low, sell high"

"Don't serve people who don't have money." That is a very good tip. :p
