I was interested in how much gas money everyone has saved per week just going to work in their Prius vs their previous auto.

My round trip to work and home is 48 miles. Round Rock to Austin TX. Gas at $3.30/gal I am saving $28 a week in driving to work alone since shedding my 05 Pathfinder. Of course with all the other trips and errands I am saving more. Things that make you go hmmmm.

My typical commute is roughly 60 miles per day.

My old car was averaging 18mpg. my dad's F450 ( our work truck ) gets only 14mpg.

On the average of 350 to 400 miles a week.. and prices at $3.90

Prius: roughly $40.00 a week in gas.
'87 Lincoln Mark VII: roughly $85.00 a week in gas
    2005 F450 Diesel: roughly $114.00 a week in gas.

    so i'm saving between $45.00 and $75.00 a week.. or very roughly $2,340.00 to $3,900.00 a year.

oh wait.. my father still drives the F450 almost daily.

I am saving roughly $30 per week on my work commute alone, overall I save about $250 per month on the Prius from my 04' Expedition. :D

I apx. save around $200.00 a month after I got rid of my old Nissan minivan. My Taurus SHO is rarely driven nowadays and just sits inside the garage...soon will be inherited by my daughter going back and forth from HS.

I've been dead even on the commute to work. I'm using the same amount of fuel with the Prius as I did with our Ford Aerostar van. The fifteen foot walk takes zero fuel either way. :D

$125 saved a month, which is what I used to justify purchasing the Prius in the first place. Brings net monthly car payment to ~$300/mth.

My commute is only 40 miles per week, so the savings for that are pretty low. My car is 5 days shy of its first birthday and it has about 9500 miles on the odometer. So far my rough estimate is that I've saved about $750 on gas this year.

I'm also driving less in general now, because since I got the Prius I'm more conscious of my driving habits, and as a result I'm doing things like combining short trips and walking more to run errands. So that's an additional savings.

My previous vehicle got 19 mpg. So for every 1,000 miles my old car took 52 gallons of gas. The Pruis uses 20 gallons of gas (at 50 mpg), saving 32 gallons every 1,000 miles driven. Doing the math, that's about $104 savings at 3.25 a gallon, or $112 savings at 3.50 a gallon for every 1,000 miles driven.

about 60 gallons a month savings, about $200 a month at current prices.
the prior vehicle was a jeep, which ran about 15mpg.

    Let's see:
Daily commute = 50 miles so weekly is 250 miles.

Used to average 25 mpg so that's 10 gallons per week. At $3.50/gallon, that would be $35/week.

My current 12-month average is 59 mpg so that's 4.23 gallons per week costing $14.8/week.

    A weekly savings of $20.20!

That's enough for me to take up smoking so I can throw butts out my window. I'll get right on that.

Tom beat me to it, but I save $0 on gas... my bike ride to work takes exactly as much gasoline before and after buying a Prius. :)

My old '96 Maxima got 27mpg on my commute of 120 miles a day. The Prius gets 50 mpg on my commute, so at $3.80/gallon the Prius saves me:

    $7.77 a week
    $155 a month
$3729 since I bought my prius 2 years ago

I did the same calculation before I bought my Prius to justify the hybrid 'premium' that was in the press at the time.

My Prius also saves me at least 30 minutes a day on my commute with my California HOV stickers. :D

LOL. Tom and you are lucky. If I tried to ride a bike to work It would be difficult. Not the 48 mile round trip but the obstacles in the way...construction, freeways, highways, byways, trains, and most importantly the insane car drivers.

I originally worked 7 minutes from home then 30 minutes now sometimes 1+ hour. Life easily changes me. I can't easily change life.

I have an 80 mile round trip to work. I often drive more as part of my job.

My old car was a 1995 Ford Taurus with 22 mpg: ~$63 a week at $3.50 gas

New to me car is 2004 Prius with ~47 mpg: ~$30 a week at $3.50 gas

    Savings: $33 a week

I'm feeling good about this now :)

Good news for you! I think you mistyped and you're actually saving even more fuel. If you drive 120 miles a day, you're saving $7.77 per day, not per week. Enjoy!

I have a short commute, only about 15 miles a day, but I go to work almost every day, and my average yearly driving is about 12000 miles a year, so about 230 miles a week (gee that's a lot of errands!)

    Old vehicle: 1999 F150. 14 mpg = 16.4 gallons per week
New vehicle: 2008 Prius. 48 mpg = 4.8 gallons per week

assume the $3.50 that gas costs here now:

    F150: 16.4x3.5 = $57.40 a week or $2985 a year
    Prius: 4.8x3.5 = $16.80 a week or $874 a year

    Savings: $40.6 a week or $2111 a year.

If I keep my Prius for 10 years (which I plan to) I will make up the cost of the Prius in fuel savings!

    I love my Prius.

I think you're looking at that all wrong. You're using maybe a gallon/week for commuting, compared to all these other people 8 gallons or more/week, so you're saving a ton of money.

It's not mpg's that count, it's gpm's (gallons per month).
I used to use 48 gallons/month total (about 27 gallons/month on the commute), then I changed jobs for a shorter commute and then bought a Prius, now I average 17 gallons/month (3 gallons/month for commuting). I bike to work several times a week about 6 months a year.

Okay let me clarify - the savings for my commute compared to what I spent on gas when I drove a Camry for the same commute are not that dramatic.

But yeah, I save a ton compared to people who have long commutes.

My Daily Commute to the train Station

    5.6 Miles Round trip

    My 2008 Prius @ 40MPG (City and traffic Lights) @ $3.9/Gallon
    Cost/Day =$.56
    Cost?Month=11.76 @ 21 working Days

    My 2007 CR-V 4WD @ 19MPG (City and traffic Lights) @ $3.9/Gallon
    Cost/Day =$1.14
    Cost?Month=23.94 @ 21 working Days

    $ Saved/Month = $12.change
    $ Saved/year = $144.change

This is my 3rd prius. Savings to me is just an added incentive :nerd:

You're right grabbed the day value by mistake.
