I figure I've saved $2400.oo in the past year, having driven 25000 miles over my 100 mile/day commute.
59 MPG average (conservative) vs. 21 MPG in my previous truck

My commute is 70km round trip, I work 19 days every 4 weeks and have 4 weeks holidays a year.
Give this and doing nothing but commute to and from work I cover 16,000 kilometres per year commuting. Of course I use the car for lots of other thing like running kids around, weekend trips, holidays and shopping but for going to and from work 16,000 kilometres.

My Prius uses 4.3 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres on my daily commute although a little more on the open road when I am on holidays but we are not concerned with holidays.
My last car had fuel economy which varied depending on how I drove, I did use 1 tank of fuel driving in a risky manor like turning off the engine going down hills and I got 7L/100km but when driven very normally, (engine on whole commute, keeping up with traffic etc.) I would use 8.5L/100km.
Given these numbers I use 4.2 litres less fuel every 100 kilometres.

    16,000 divided by 100 equals 160
multiply 160 by 4.2 litres equals 672 litres of fuel saved.
Petrol is selling today for about $1.50 per litre, it changes up and down on a weekly cycle but about $1.50 right now so the 672 litres of fuel if I bought it today would cost $1008.00

Driving a Prius on my daily commute only would reduce my fuel spend by
    $1008AU per year.

Of course my old car (17 years old) was paid for and the payments for this car are about $350 per month or $4200 per year after the tax savings are taken into account.
We are fortunate in that we pay our car payment from pre-tax income. This isn't common in Australia. Actual payments are $520 per month.

We drive 50 miles round trip, the entire family carpooling.

Our Sienna got about 21 mpg, so just shy of 12 gallons/week = $36 minimum (actually closer to $40 now!).

Our Prius is getting about 50 mpg on average, it's going up recently but only high 40's when it was cold...so 5 gallons a week = $15 minimum.

    So $21 week at least.

We did calculate the current miles on the Prius and determined that at a generous 21 mpg/$3 gallon, we've saved $1600 total since getting the Prius.

My previous car a 1997 Eagle Talon averaged 32 MPG. My lifetime average in my Prius is 53.3 MPG. In this first year I drove the Prius 30,000 miles.
Assuming I put the same miles on my Talon I would have used 938 gallons, in the Prius 563 gallons.
If I assume that I paid an average of $3 per gallon over the 12 months I saved $1125 (technically making my car payment $191)

But when it broke down last year (Eagle Talon) and would cost more then the vehicle was worth to fix I started driving our old garaged 1991 Ford Explorer 15 MPG (excellent condition just a gas hog) I mean it seemed like a good idea to just run it rather then get a new car. I drove it for 2 months before I had enough. If I compare my savings to driving that Beast I would have used 2000 gallons, so I could also say I saved $4312 (technically canceling out my payment and paying me $75)

Between the wife and I the Prius saves us about 15 gallons/week just driving to work. At $3.50/gallon that should work out to a savings of over $2600 per year.

always been conservative and its been 4 years since driving anything (on a regular basis) that got less than 30 mpg.

but on the Pri summer figures, it was about $4.50-4.90 a week... but now i do about $1.62 or so in the Zenn

we made the biggest conservation leap 3 years ago by simply making the decision to not commute.

in the past two weeks, our mileage needs have dropped even further as my in-laws were babysitting 3 days a week for us which required a 20 mile trip one way to drop my Son off. they have also decided not to commute and have sold their house and moved into town. they now live 2 miles away and its only a few blocks detour going to work.
