As mentioned, as long as a title has not been issued, the car is considered "new" when sold, regardless of mileage. In this case, check the used car value and subtract $5000. That would be my starting point in negotiations.

That's how I negotiated my last car. When the sales guy walked away I just put the money on the desk and waited for him to come back. "Five(5) stacks ... Out the door ... Yes or NO?". ... I just wanted to say "Five Stacks". ... It was fun.

Huh? Do you mean here on a mainly Toyota forum? Well then, of course, yes.

But if you mean on the interwebs, then no. Plenty of active Subie forums. I like this one for our OutBack: Subaru Outback - Subaru Outback Forums Just turn 100,000 miles on our 2015 with zero issues and still on the original brake pads/rotors.

    Also, one thing?
I hope the dealership doesn't know she "loves the vehicle.
You always want them to think you're perfectly willing to walk away if the deal isn't good enough.
If she "loves" the vehicle and they know it?
They're going to think the hook is well set, and getting any additional discount is going to be that much tougher.

If they are not budging from the $3000 discount, it's because they don't think they have to do so.

Update: They gave us the car to test overnight. It was great and we really liked it, except... 6,000 miles isn’t “new.”

So we talked to the sales guy and it was pretty weird... he said they can’t discount this car more than $3,000, but they can discount a new car $3,000. Didn’t make much sense to me, but that’s where we left things and we’re not in a hurry to buy a new car anyway. We might wait until November/December, when they’ll be a lot more likely to discount.

I've done stuff like that as well. It helps to really, really know what the best possible price is. That's what the Internet is so great for... you can see what dozens of other people paid for a car.

If you still have the car, run CarFax on the vin, you can find out whether it has been registered and titled.
If it is registered, then walk away.

This is a price directly from a dealership in Florida stadiumtoyota. I know incentives vary by area but this is a mock purchase today and they are knocking 4k off the price plus an extra $500 and this should be close to 0k miles. Try checking other sublocal dealerships. I know California seems to have the deals on priuses and you might even want to look into a prime as well if you can get the 4k back on a tax credit and can plug in once in a while.
