Like most gambles buying an old beater can be reduced to a fairly simple math problem. I like to look at $ & hrs of work per month. If it’s a small number then you win. For example if you can drive that $900 car for 9 months that’s 100 a month car. As soon as it requires any serious wrenching you can donate it, junk it or try to get a few bucks on CL.

I’m leaving reliability out of the equation because if you’re looking at high mileage beaters you aren’t going to find reliable.

    But it's an ex-taxi.
Think of the stories that Prius could tell!

    I wouldn't buy it for $1300.
    But...
I could of been tempted for $900.
I think I've owned bicycles that cost more.

    Those parameters...
Of course it's not a "Wise" choice.
    But as pointed out....
    at $900?
If you duct taped and prayed your way to 9 months or more of use?
    That's owning and operating a Prius for only $100 a month..not bad...anything more is gravy. .

If it broke down 3 days after purchase?
You might only lose $100's of dollars as you could probably recoup some of the $900 just salvaging out the Prius.

I would be concerned about safety...nothing is a good buy-or even fun gamble- if it's not safe

If repairs are necessary down the road, it looks like you'd be able to handle them no problem. See if you can find out if the hybrid battery was ever replaced, and at what mileage. I would offer $750 and see what they say...

i am a contractor building custom wood staircases, fairly expensive. One of my repeat customers, who is also a used car dealer, gave me a 2007 with 275000 mi. on it. I told him i didnt want the p.o.s. Long story short , it has been one of the best cars Ive ever owend. it now has 335000 mi. on it and i have no planes to get rid of it. One of the best cars ive ever owend. Have done a some maintaince, nothing major, breaks, caliper, etc. but i am a DIY person. These are graet cars! They just keep going, im reeding fourms that people are getting well over 500000 mi. on them.
