HV Battery care " parking in the red

    Your technique, esp. if you really are somehow getting up to 89% SOC routinely, will likely shorten your battery life. It's simply not designed for that high of cycling range. As mentioned it's designed for maximal battery life when maintained in a very narrow charge/Discharge band...hence the 60% SOC target with very little variation.

    Memory effect is NOT something common to all rechargable battery types.

    Indeed, Toyota's NiMH battery management strategy tries to minimize the depth of charge and discharge. After some 15 years of development and use it is highly likely that this gives better battery life than anything an amateur can come up with, no matter how talented or enthusiastic. If the OP has noticed an MPG improvement it is because of other factors, either external or unconscious changes in driving technique. Changes in battery life of course will not be evident until it's too late :_>

    I'm sure somewhere on this forum there is an in-depth explanation of the battery management strategy designed into the Prius charging system, but it is specifically designed to extend the life and minimize the memory effects of the NiMH battery packs. If I remember correctly it involves regularly shifting the operating range of the battery system around, so sometimes it operates between 40 and 80 percent, other times between 45 and 85 percent, etc. Sounds like the Toyota engineers are way ahead of you.
