thank you bob. toyota had a good month vs last year. i'm sure there are myriad reasons that have nothing to do with the publics enthusiasm for hybrids.

That is sad, auto sales were way up 13.7% versus January a year ago. Low gas prices leave hybrids continuing in their downward spiral falling 8.8% from the same month a year ago. Toyota did better than most hybrid vendors, but the only Toyota hybrid that beat the car market for growth was the hihy on a recovery to 268 units. To put that in perspective the i3 sold 640 units.

Plug-ins had a bad month. If you look at inside ev they only 6.7% compared to january 2014, which was a bad month last year. The biggest laggards were the volt and prius phv, but that was to be expected. GM is pushing the next volt depressing sales until the new one comes out, toyota seems to just be ignoring the phv and pushing the mirai. BMW hit third place in plug-ins with the i3 as Toyota and chevy dropped.

My theory is Volt and PiP are down reflecting expected lower sales in post-CA-green-HOV-sticker era. In any case, the current temporary extension of green HOV stickers is helping the newer PHEV's (BMW etc) get some sales and green HOV stickers.

Three incentives issues on the immediate horizon:
    > CA green HOV stickers ending for PHEV
    > WA BEV tax credit ends July unless extended
    > GA considering ending $5k BEV tax credit

Hybrid sales I think we need to realize truck sales are up vs. cars, if we normalize for % of cars that are sold versus trucks that may show hybrids holding good percent of car market per se. At least all those F150s are aluminum.

I'm still waiting on the power brick for my laptop but don't be surprised by the Prius hatchback numbers. From memory, it took a big hit which I suspect is "new model" and "low gas" prices. The Prius c and Prius v seemed to weather it OK but the hatchback looks to be soft.

In about one week or so we should get the offical CNCDA 2014 California numbers, that's when we can say what% of Plug_ins are sold in CA, but its running around 50%.

Geez do you think Toyota could put in more than a cursory effort to secure a Prius battery so that it can't be snipped and stolen in a couple minutes?

Whole lot of alt vehicles only 3.3% of new car sales Jan '15.

is that the cause of the poor sales?

Poor sales are the result of high alt vehicle prices and the other 96% are probably going to mention something negative they 'heard about those expensive batteries'.

Prius Two's cost $5,000 more than a Corolla LE at discount and many (US) consumers would say they look a little weird outside and really weird inside.

According to grumpycab, even super high gas prices in UK aren't enough to drive sales of Prius (liftback). Do we need any more evidence that the whole futuristic, Star Trek, nerdy approach of liftback Prius has gotten old?

Better hope the 4th gen is really good to pick up the sales. But, the Prius is really designed for the Japanese market isn't it? They don't want to make it here.

I say its a problem that sales are so low in Nissan's home market, not that it will drain the grid. IIRC japan uses about 1000 TWH a year and 2014 leaves will use about 0.05 TWH, which seems like a rounding error. For comparison wind in texas in 2013 supplied 36 TWH (2014 is higher but not out yet). Replacing power or turning more nukes back on is a 10 year problem. Importing less oil for Japan is a more exisential one, and fuel cells will take 3 or 4 times the electricity per mile.

Its hard to polish that turd of only a 9% gain in Nissan's home market given the range beter matches that counries driving habits and the large number of L3 chargers.
Worldwide the leaf had great growth and good sales
