    Prius liftback good performance:

I think word of mouth is finally spreading about what a fantastic car it is. And bargain pricing, to make them go away!

Thanks Bob I always "like" your post because the good work you put in to give the data to us.

Jeff Cobb said the hybrid "take rate" was best in May since Sept, so relatively good news despite declining hybrid trend I suppose.

Gotta think we are seeing a CA green sticker effect on the improved PHEV sales in May, CA consumers buying up last green HOV stickers, but sounds like CA may add yet more green stickers (never ending extensions?).

    Something else from Jeff's report:
    • 1.15% - diesel
    • 2.47% - hybrids
    • 0.27% - plug-in hybrids
    • 0.43% - EVs
Michael Horn took over Volkswagen Group of American. Although we don't have hard reports, it appears VW has dropped their anti-Prius nonsense. They've also fixed a lot of issues with their diesels and now are seeing some market success. What a concept, make a better product and stop mentioning their competition in their ads . . . Horn has his eye on the ball.

Plug-in hybrids are an order of magnitude under hybrid sales and EVs half an order of magnitude. During the last decade, a lot of automotive writers and 'industry' talking heads called the Prius a 'halo' car. They claimed we were making a statement for environmentalism. But now, I'm wondering if the former Prius, now plug-in and EV owners might have been the 'halo' buyers?

Now I am the first to say this would be unfair. There are practical, economic reasons for owning an EV for urban commutes. Yet I notice there have been more than a few brick-bats tossed out about the 'clean grid' citing 'dirty coal plants.'

This criticism never made sense because it is selective to the car and not advocating shutting down the large electrical users, homes and businesses. But it does make sense if the critics have bought into the false claim Plug-Ins and EVs are 'halo' buyers, making an environmental statement.

Back when others tried to get my goat by calling my Prius "green", I would to tell them:

You're right but it is Yankee greenback dollar green! I like going on a trip and not having to choose between enough gas to get back home with a gas station hot dog or a nice dinner and change for gas.

So smile and say "I'm paying 1/3d the gas cost in my EV/Plug-In. Money out of my pocket." Let the new found 'dirty grid' advocate defend their claimed position; congratulate them on their environmental concern, and; let's talk efficient cars.

    Good luck!

For January to May, plug-in sales are only up 0.1% in 2015 versus 2014. May sales were down 7% from last year
May 2015 EV Sales Up 27%: The "Big Boys" Re-Take The Playground
Prius phv ends production this month until the next gen is ready sometime next year, but will continue selling inventory. It sold 727 versus that huge 2692 last year. Volt and leaf and ford energis are down a little from last year as people wait for the gen II volt and 2016 longer range leaf. Tesla model S, bmw i3, and fiat 500e have made up for the lower sales from toyota, gm, nissan, and ford.

I expect 2016 with the model X, outlander phev, and gen II volt, along with bmw working through some of its supplier issues will give strong growth compared to this year, but we may have some more down months as tesla, gm, and nissan get the cars people are waiting for into showrooms.

Worse than that, hybrids are down 18%, diesels down 2%, and plug-ins flat year on year for the period January-May in 2015 verus 2014. The light vehicle market was up 4.5% in the same time period.

Factors are a switch from cars to crossovers, SUVs, and trucks where hybrids do worse, low oil prices, and of course people waiting for new models (gen IV prius, tesla model X, gen II volt, etc).

Cafe standards are kicking in and get fairly aggressive by 2025. That should bring about more plug-in sales, and hybrid trucks (get bonuses in cafe). I would expect by 2025 oil prices will be higher ;-) as OPEC doesn't let this high production last more than a decade. I think we should see increased hybrid + plug-in sales by 2020.

When I read this, I remembered a similar 'problem' Apple users faced in the 1990s:
Computer technology was advancing rapidly with 8" to 5" to 3" floppies and eventually replaced by small, fast hard disks. Memory and CPU followed Moore's Law, doubling every 18 months. People claimed they were not going to buy a Mac today because a better one was rumored/announced. But many of us who bought the original 128K Mac pointed out,'If you need a Mac today, buy it, get rich, and buy the next one another day.'

We have a 2003 Prius and it gives us 52 MPG year-to-year. In contrast, 97% of all cars are in the:

Average fuel economy of US cars reaches an all-time high

Average fuel economy of all cars in the US reached 24.6 miles per gallon – not high for your average hybrid, but the highest it's ever been.
By Antony Ingram, Guest blogger APRIL 6, 2013

Source: Average fuel economy of US cars reaches an all-time high - CSMonitor.com

Our 2010 Prius also gets 52 MPG but 5 mph faster. We are already achieving twice the efficiency of the remaining 97%. If we get an EV, our mileage goes up even higher.

Enjoy the pleasures of today as tomorrow will come by itself. We can change then paid in part by the wonderful machines we have today.

The big challenge for the dealerships is that with my Toyota Prius performing so well and being so reliable is that it is a hard act to follow - so I'm not likely to trade in my current car for a new car. I'm more likely to just buy a new set of tires and hold on to my current car.

Seems smart for Hyundai to essentially copy the upcoming Prius liftback which has proven time and again it can outsell the 2nd place hybrid 3 to 1. Obviously the Prius liftback is the most dersirable 'form' for a hybrid car since the other 25 or so hybrid entries don't get within a third of liftback sales.

personally, i think it's the mileage and historical reliability, not the form factor.

    +1

The midsize sedan hybrids have ICEV competition from themselves, and the hybrid premium still buys a lot of gas.

For year end 2011, Prius liftback (and a few v's) ended up Toyota's 3rd best selling vehicle in the US

So far this year? Prius / PiP combo is running 8th place, and it is behind Sienna and Tundra. And the PiP is going off the market for over a year. That's 8th place out of 16 distinct models for Toyota.

    GOOD CAR BAD CAR

that's because gas is $2.50 per gallon. chicken feed. we won't see major growth until it goes over $4.00 except the stimulation from the new model this fall.

Anyone have Japanese and/or EU sales numbers?

Is it even sold in China?

Perhaps some people need to get pissed at the gas pump to remember to buy a Prius.
