Hey guys! I had the dealership do a multi point inspection on my 2008 Gen 2 this week. They stated at the end that, "Fluid levels and condition are good at inspection, unable to check hybrid motor generator oil level, no dipstick provide, this service is recommended due to age and mileage".

What does this mean? Also, if they said fluids looked good, should I go ahead and try and replace them anyways since my car is 175K miles in?

They wanted to charge me $352.13 to drain and fill the invertor coolant, $431.28 for the transmission fluid (they said because it is a closed system) and $169.99 for the brake fluid. These prices seemed way too high for me. Thoughts?

If you can, start using another dealership. It's hard to tell if they're just nuts, or nuts and larcenous. Either way.

Do you have that info on paper with dealers letterhead. That transaxle fluid change quote in particular is a doozy: I would scan and email to Toyota Corporate.

Hey the brake fluid change is not too far out of line. Except with their other statements I wouldn't trust them to not screw it up.

Dealership labor is always on the higher end, and perhaps you could find a shop with hybrid experience locally to do it cheaper?

DIY is the cheapest way, if you're able to perform the tasks...

There are plenty of tutorial videos on YouTube, and highly recommend NutzAboutBolts videos if you're considering DIY...

I don't have any of it on paper with letterhead, only text messages. What should I do? Request it?

Also, the brake fluid one didn't scare me it was the other two.

I will probably DIY the drain and fills except for the brake one. Thank you for the recommendation to check out those videos.

yeah try to get a hard copy quote. Do screen grabs of the text too.

Sad thing is: the transaxle fluid change quote is often something like that. It's in reality a simple drain and fill.

So normally that's how much it would cost?

A fair price would be $100 tops.

Four quarts of Toyota ATF WS fluid are required. They retail for around $9 apiece. There's a drain and fill bolt washer. Say $40 all-in for the parts. The labour is comparable to an oil change, say 1/2 hour. Nothing complicated: drain, fill till it starts coming back out, done. No temp requirement, done with the car off.

    Good one Mendel.

i would avoid whatever dealer that is as they are clueless about a G2.

Yeah third gen Repair Manual has a non-techstream brake fluid bleed procedure, but second gen does not. I would leave the brake fluid change to Toyota dealership. Still, considering their track record, maybe shop around.

FWIW, Toyota Canada says tri-yearly or 30k miles for that. Their US counterpart makes no mention.

That's basically change the brake and transaxle fluid? $600 plus? About $350~400 too much.

The supplies would be about $60, if you can DIY.

Those guys should be run outa town.

Yes it is wild. They are saying the fluid alone cost them $224 for the transaxle fluid only. Not the brake fluid.

I buy Toyota ATF WS (proper transaxle fluid) for $9.14 CDN per litre, 4 required. And for brake fluid change I use a couple of pints of Toyota DOT 3 brake fluid, around $7.50 CDN apiece.

I paid $150 (fluid and labor) for a CVT drain and fill at dealer. I was satisfied with that price.

That's still extravagant. $80~100 would be fair.

The fluid and two washers retail for around $40 cdn up here, and it's about the same complexity as an oil change: raise car, remove underpanel (not strictly necessary but makes for easier access and less chance of a splash mess), remove fill bolt, remove drain bolt, install drain bolt (with fresh washer), add fluid till it starts coming back out, and install fill bolt.

    For a pro garage with a lift, that's a 1/2 hour job.

At $140 an hour paying $150 is not bad for trans fluid dump.

So clearly $415 for this job would be highway robbery then! That is what my dealer wants to charge me.

I would pay $150, but they want over $400 to do this!
