I can not believe you are dismissing the performance benefit that HSD bring. Even official Toyota figure confirms it (1.5l beats 2.4l) and you are down playing this... Why?

I own a Prius, and this nonsense has to stop. The Prius's electrical motor may make 295 lb/ft of torque, but hardly any of that makes it to the wheels due to drivetrain losses. For christ's sake, look at the graph of the TDI's torque plot above, and compare that to a Prius's torque plot, where the Prius never exceeds the Jetta's output? Where is the 295 lb/ft?

Drivetrain losses.

Now look at the next link for the 2006 Jetta TDI. Sorry guys, but it's now faster than our Prius. The TDI is faster. It's a bitter pill, but it has to be swallowed. Not only is it faster, it brakes better and it's got a better safety rating.

Because I drive the damn thing every day, and I know that the graph you have is a best case scenario. If you're crusing along at 50mph, and need to pass, you have to punch it and wait for the ICE to rev up. End. Of. Story. I've even had it lag when I've given it gas/laid off/given it gas in a quick sequence (like in an intersection).

Good point. When the transmission requires manual labor work, there is human error (pun intended). It is the driver's error or willingness to take risk that can make or break the race. HSD powered cars are prone for human error during acceleration, therefore higher chance of winning.

Dude, Lexus LS600h does 0-60 in less than 5 seconds. Are you saying Viper can do 2.5 secs?

i think a 2 year old in a Viper running on 5 cylinders could beat a Prius, its not that hard to just put it in gear and go, which is really all you would need for a Prius, its when you have 2 evenly matched cars that the driver becomes important. You are correct about that auto being more reliable, perfect shift every time, but manuals hold more power, are funner to drive, and i bet your fancy smanshy hybrid would get better gas mileage with a T-56, although you have absolutely no power so it would be slow as hell since it has a 2.66 first gear, but that dam .5 6th gear is really what saves gas. And how can hybrid cars help racing? Its just another extremely complicated system that could break and cost thousands to replace, ill stick with my "old fashioned" fuel injected push rod motors, god forbid i mention carbs

How about cover Power Efficiency, Low Emission, Smooth Power Delivery, and 95% owner satisfication? Instead of same old same old?

alright guys. all arguing-for-the-sake-of-arguing and sarcasm aside...

the prius is not something you buy if you want to drag race. power is not the basis for its design. the prius is not even in the same category as the cars that others are coming here and talking about. since these muscle car folks clearly think in terms of a 1/4 mile race, in their world the prius does not exist, simple as that. we can't compete with their 1/4 mile times, no way no how. likewise, their cars are not built for efficiency and mileage wise, they can't compete with our numbers. it's like taking a cat to a dog show and vice versa. it's an entirely different animal.

racing a viper in a prius, well, we all know that's a load of BS. i think that's something we can all agree on. i do see some people pushing the opposite end here- barely being able to keep up with a geo metro? i think that's some underestimating there. the car has some good low-end torque *for its class* and that's all i'll say.

i've never driven a really high-powered car before, and i'm sure most of the folks from other forums haven't driven a prius. so none of us really understand the other's side of this.

i shouldn't have gotten into this thread to begin with... man...

You guys realize you are being laughed at on several other car forums right? In terms of performance your car sucks, the only conceivable situation in which your car would beat any even remotely "sporty" car would be 30-50 with the other car failing to downshift and punching it below 3500 RPM, which is not a likely situation. Your car can't handle for shit. A RWD car will handle better than a FWD car, assuming both are modified to the same extent, 99.999999% of the time. A RWD car will go faster in a drag race than a FWD car 99.9999% of the time. The only situation in which FWD is desirable over RWD is on dirt/snow in a rally. Unless you guys live in some remote part of Africa I really doubt your stoplight races took place on dirt roads. Thank you for confirming all the hybrid driver stereotypes, have fun racing Vipers, lmao.

Before you start hearing the ICE, did you realize that you are already gaining speed? This is due to the instant 28 hp from the battery pack. You probably won't feel the G due of the smoothness but it is there. I enjoy passing cars in Prius on the highway because of that.

Does that 28hp get me anything other than standing still in an intersection, or is that just lag from both engines spinning up?

Prius does not have an automatic transmission. In fact, Prius doesn't have a transmission and there are no shifting. At 70mph, ICE can be revving 1,100 RPM when going down hill. ICE can be at 3k RPM going 20 mph uphill. Mechanically, it is simplier as well.

If you want to read up about it, here is a great link.

I think the peak battery output is conserved to extend battery life... for now. Remember, Prius was not designed with performance as a top priority. It was designed to warrent the battery pack for 10 years, 150,000 miles to achieve AT-PZEV. Wait until Li-ion and/or Ultra caps in next gen.

There you are, link's above. FYI, it's faster, stops better, handles better, and is safer. I'll admit it.

Ok, here is a simple question.

For Jetta, why is 5-60 mph slower than 0-60 time? For Prius they are the same 11.3 sec, showing consistent power delivery. Without Jetta clutch dropping (cheating) Prius is faster... 11.3 vs 11.6.

How in the blue hell is clutch dropping cheating? If you slip the clutch you put a shit-ton more stress on it than if you just drop it.

As the car tested was a DSG Automanual, and has NO HUMAN CONTROLLED CLUTCH, I fail to see how the clutch can be dropped.

If you drop the clutch at 2,525 rpm with 177 lbs-ft torque engine, you are starting off with 88 hp (potential energy) stored in the engine. A lot more than an engine idling.

Ok, I didn't completely read the review but... why is 5-60 slower for Jetta? Delay in shifting? I thought DSG suppose to shift ahead. Why 1.3 seconds delay? Imagine delays for DSG while highway passing... Not only there will be upshift delays but also downshift delays.

Then why is the Prius's 5-60 time the exact same as it's 0-60 time? I thought the HSD transmission was so efficient it should be quicker?

Face the facts, your car sucks. Not only do you look like a douchebag driving it but it is one of the slowest cars on the road.

If it was just idling, the Prius has 295 ft/lbs, but we're not talking about that are we?

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(TorqueDog @ Jun 12 2006, 06:47 PM) </div>
How can anybody take you seriously if you can't even do math on a public forum?

If going by equally tested government published specs, the 2005 Jetta TDI gets 43mpg (highway) on a 14.5 gallon tank. That's 623.5 miles per tank versus the Prius EPA highway of 51mpg on a 11.9 gallon tank for 606.9 miles/tank. 14.5 gallons is bigger than 11.9 isn't it? Wow!

Now, how about your other numbers. If a TDI was getting 860 miles/tank, and the tank is 14.5 gallons, shouldn't the MPG be 59mpg? If you wanted to compare the best somebody can squeeze out without treating it as a crotch-rocket, you have an undocumented 55mpg on a probable conservative TDI driver. Well, the Prius has documented 60mpg+ driving it conservatively.

For argument's sake, isn't 860 miles / 55 mpg = 15.6 gallons? Filling up the filler tube maybe? We've already had one Japanese dude recently demonstrate 1372 miles on a 15.8 gallon tank (Japanese-size). That's.. let's do the math here... 86 MPG!!!

You need to come up with something else besides being rude.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(TorqueDog @ Jun 12 2006, 06:47 PM) </div>
Maybe a used one, because you sure can't get a new 2006+ model in the States until Volkswagen can come up with a TDI that passes recent emission rules.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(SLH350 @ Jun 12 2006, 07:24 PM) </div>
Hey, that's fair. You guys realize we laugh at you all the time because of how much lighter your wallet gets every time you fill up while trying to justify your crotch rocket addiction.

You notice the topic says "practical and fun to drive". Considering the Prius was never billed as a performance car, did you guys get lost while getting laughed out of the ricer forums who probably like to point out to you that straight-line performance is pointless if you can't turn it on the road?
