I like the head lights better than the G4's.

    PS (after another look)
I will even go so far to say that I like the grille and headlights better than the G4.

all the talk about beautiful hundai styling and this is what they come up with? it better perform, or they'll be crawling back down the rabbit hole with honda.

Even worse, some rumors suggest it's 6 speed DCT (Double clutch transmission). That 8AT was just announced together with 1.6 GDI, coincidence, PR doesn't mention any hybrid application with 8AT.

From an exterior visual (photograph) viewpoint, I generally like the Hyundai, mainly, because I liked the look of the G3.

The G4 may be a technological achievement, and it may be the best thing "since sliced bread," but I still find the "exterior visual (pholograph)" clumsy and unattractive. But then I am too old to understand or appreciate the "youthful" appearance that Toyota executives are reported to have wanted.

I thought the under sized engine that the first gen volt had was supposed to be one of its shortcomings - ie; the primary reason its CS mpg was so paltry. After all, their 2nd gen has a bigger ice, yet it yields a higher EPA mpg in CS mode.

GM presented the concept Volt as having an engine to address "range anxiety". It was only for those rare instances when you needed to travel farther than what the battery-capacity offered.

The plan was to deliver a system which used a small 3-cylinder engine that did nothing but generate electricity.

Instead, they used an off-the-shelf 4-cylinder engine, which could provide thrust directly to the wheels. It was far bigger and far more powerful... much more expensive than anticipated too.

That disenchanted purists... especially when BMW delivered what GM didn't. The i3 has a tiny (650cc) engine used exclusively for electricity generating.

Volt gen-2 retained the same larger engine. MPG did improve, but not much and it still operates the same way.

It appears the Ioniq might be an actual sedan.
They wanted a smaller turbo originally; Perhaps 1L in displacement. Then the recession hit, and they went with an existing engine. At its core, the gen1 Volt ICE is the 1.4L used in the Cruze and Sonic without the turbo. Fuel efficiency may have been better even then, but the resulting engine noise was deemed unacceptable. Audi ran into the same issue with its early A1 Etron PHV. It was a pure serial hybrid with a rotorary engine even smaller than in the i3 REX. It was supposed to just run at one, efficient speed. Drivers and passengers found the unchanging engine note disconcerting though, and the car was programmed to use 3 different rpms to follow the car's speed.

The gen2 Volt ICE got bigger by 0.1L, but it is also a more technologically advanced ICE, with direct injection and wider valve control. GM does have a 1l turbo available now, but feedback of gen1 owners says they want an even quieter ICE, which would have been harder to achieve with a 3 cylinder turbo than the naturally aspirated 4 cylinder.

At that time, GM had an existing 48 kW (64 HP) 1.0L 3 cylinder engine (at 5300 rpm) although the concept in 2007 was to use a turbocharged variant of it that would provide 53 kW (71 HP) at lower rpms. Ultimately, they chose a 4 cylinder non-turbo that generated 63 kW (84 HP). I'm not sure if that qualifies as "far bigger" and "far more powerful". Was the non-turbo 4 cylinder "much more expensive" than the 3 cylinder turbo-ized? I don't know.

The BMW i3 uses a 2 cylinder engine that generates 25 kW (33 HP).

Many years ago, when I had hair, some folks started posting rave reviews about the new, 'clean diesels'. In the spirit of Christmas, I wish @GasperG and @Netcub the same success and fame.

Time again for the biannual, Prius-killer, Beta.
