Techstream or D8 with D8 based on a few recent reports.

It might be cheaper and quicker to get an independent Toyota specialist with experience on brake booster setup or a dealer to do it.

(Don’t make me break out my “Lead a Horse to …” meme)

Just curious: could you drive (carefully) to dealership with the brakes in current condition. Might be a good workflow.

The brakes work fine, I’m only missing regen and the trouble codes are still there but braking feels wonderful compared to before the part change. Im trying to avoid the dealer but I may have no choice…unless I figure out how to use and setup texhstream

If you take it to the dealer who sold you the part AND it turns out to have the wrong firmware THEN it is likely to be on them.

I’m going to attempt to techstream myself before a dealer visit. I’m going to order this mini vci

Then on an old laptop I’m going to download techstream from here:
    https://techinfo.toyota.com/techInfoPortal/appmanager/t3/ti?_pageLabel=ti_whats_tis&_nfpb=true

    OR here for free:

Free Download TOYOTA Techstream V18.00.008 (02/2023) | OBDII365.com Official Blog

Then I’m going to follow these directions:

    (1) Remove the brake master cylinder reservoir filler cap assembly.
    (2) Add brake fluid into the reservoir between MAX and MIN level on the brake fluid reservoir.
    Brake fluid:
    SAE J1703 or FMVSS No. 116 DOT3
    (3) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3 and turn the power switch on (IG).
    (4) Turn the Techstream on and enter the following menus: Chassis / ABS/VSC/TRC / Air Bleeding.
    (5) Select the "Usual air bleeding" on the Techstream display, and replace the brake fluid following the instructions on the Techstream.
    (6) After replacing brake fluid, tighten each bleeder plug.
    front bleeder plug - Torque: 8.3 N m (85 kgf cm, 73in lbf)
    rear bleeder plug - Torque: 11 N m (112 kgf cm, 8ft lbf)
    (c) Clear the DTCs .
    (d) Turn the Techstream off and turn the power switch off.
    (e) Inspect for brake fluid leaks.
    (f) Install the brake master cylinder

    Is this the right path?

    for me it was….

    1. Jack the car up and put it on four jack stands.
    2. Remove the wiper cowl and put an oil pan under the master cylinder and accumulator pump area
    3. Hit the Zero point program that depressurized the brake system.
    4. Pinch the brake line from the reservoir to the master cylinder off with plastic clamps.
    5. Remove the line and drain into the pan.
    6. Disconnect the lines and organize them.
    7. Remove of all the bolts that hold it in place.
    8. Remove the old master cylinder.
    9. Put a new gasket on the master cylinder and mount it after connecting the lines.
    10. Connect reservoir and add brake fluid up to the service manuals specs(I don’t remember which line). Put car in ig mode.
    11. Start brake bleed for new master cylinder not normal brake bleeding.
    12. Bleeding Starts from furthest point from master cylinder which is right rear passenger side brake. 13. Take valve cover off. Put it in your pocket. connect brake bleeder container to valve. Put an oil pan underneath right passenger side brake shoe.
    14. When prompted open the valve and close it when prompted by scantool. You must keep feeding brake fluid into reservoir so it doesn’t get low or empty
    15. The scanner will tell you to go through each brake of the car.
16.scanner will take you to the new master cynlinder and bleed that (there’s a bleeder valve on it).
    17. The cylinder will pump up and down a certain amount of times.
    18. After its bled scantool will tell you to relearn the solenoid.
    19. Tada! It’s alive.
    20. Dtc will clear on its own.

I did all that, its my scantool. When I finish bleeding the master cylinder the scantool says “airbleed fail”. The mechanic had the same issue. Im going to try the toyota software when my vci arrives, for now it brakes

I got a thinkdiag dongle directly from their site. https://thinkcarus.com/products/thinkdiag-blue-tooth-dongle honestly, I have buyers remorse because autel seems to get more reviews. There’s a thread here about obd2 scan tools.

if you can get tech stream to work and you plan on keeping the car or buying another Toyota I would try to do that. Thinkdiags free trial expires after a year. I’m guessing the bootleg tech stream is good for the gen 3 at least.

I’m not tech-savvy so where I failed you may succeed at getting tech stream . It was difficult for me to understand the non-verbal instructions given by the Chinese entrepreneur. Those mini Vci cables are Chinese knock-offs of the mongoose cable.

Everyone on the thread knows what they’re talking about except me since I followed what they recommended, watched about 10 videos, and read the service manual procedure. They’re always going to recommend tech stream(correct recommendation). They’re also never going to confirm the exact steps because there’s liability involved. I’m assuming some of them are current or former technicians.

It’s not the mini-vci interface that is the real problem with the illegal version, it’s the step by step hacks you have to do with their offline only software installation. It doesn’t have a complete Windows install program. Their setup.exe simply extracts a zip file.

But if you buy legal access from Toyota you do get a system with a complete Windows install program. It also gets you online step by step guides with hot links for sub procedures. Just have to pay $70 for two days use. By the time you buy the interface, install the hack on a laptop and struggle with no online guides for the actual brake booster job, you are better off letting an experienced guy finish the job.

For interest here are some of the hack instructions. Sound safe to you?

Couldn’t get the drivers to install correctly when I purchased one. The seller told me the version I had also doesn’t work with Hybrid vehicles.

I don’t recall, would have to go back to the thread where I was posting. I remember accessing a special function section. Are you using a Samsung or android? It looks like the correct section.

    hinkdiag support: “
    Hello sir/madam,

After we confirmed, your car is support. Please follow the steps: Toyota> Prius>2010>ABS(Anti-lock Braking System)/VSC(Vehicle Stability Control)/TRAC(Traction Control System)>Special Functions>Brake Pad Replacement( Operation Guide). If there still are any problems, please provide us a screenshot or an operating video, thanks. ”

i initially thought it had to do with the scan tool but the dealership couldn’t get it to relearn even with tech stream.“

So there’s three ways to get to the air bleeding screen. I don’t remember which one worked. I’ll post a screen recording

This is option 2. After you scan the Vin ans hit diagnose, it'll take you to the function. Screen. Go to system selection then all systems, then abs. Then you go to special functions. Then, you'll see options for bleeding and other functions.
