I don't see any copper caring less whether you have a PhD or not. Having not been through it themselves they would most likely think your some rich toffee nosed snot trying to impress with your self importance.

Congrats on your achievement Michgal, and good luck with yours Brodie.
Can I get a doctorate on line? Where? how much?

I recall reading a story about Alexander Graham Bell doing something similar. He and a house guest were discussing the theoretical impossibiity of cats turning in midair, lacking an ethereal fulcrum. So, they gathered up all the cats in the house, brought them to the lower balcony, and let the fur fly. :D

No, I believe it's Schrödinger's cat. That's bio physics at its finest.

Thanks for all the wishes, advice and support. Yesterday I learned that doctoral regalia costs $850... If I want to rent, it is $75, but it's the generic black one. If I want Michigan colors, it's that much. I mean seriously, I can go aroung the country in the Prius for that much. I am not going in to academia (the dark side), so I should find other times where I can wear it.

I am planning on moving to Cincinnati (personal reasons), so trying to find a job there. It doesn't look so good, so I might just do a post-doc for a little while. The fact that my visa restricts me to have a job "in my field" and that I have to find one before end of summer doesn't help.

As for my thesis, if you care to know, I used single molecule fluorescence imaging techniques to look at nucleic acid enzymes and their applications (go to www.thespiderworld.com - my last project is based on this)).

No cats were harmed. Some egos were.

So did you make fish night lights, as Sheldon did on The Big Bang Theory?

If the job market doesn't pan out, we can always post a thread: "Who want to marry Michgal007 and keep her in the country." :D

Hmmm? I don't get it, what does a visa have to do with .... oh, not a citizen. Never mind.

Um .... maybe try Canada? Usually easier to enter with an advanced degree

    Congrats, Michigal007!

I'll admit I had no clue what Biophysics was when you posted this thread, but I'm in our PriusChat Folding@Home team, and today when I was browsing the Folding@Home community forum, I noticed that Dr. Vijay Pande, who heads the Folding@Home project at Stanford University is also chairman of the Biophysics Department.

So I guess I've been a volunteer in Biophysics for the past couple of years without even knowing it!

    COOL!!! :thumb: :first: :whoo:

I just finished my Masters in Management, and am contemplating going for a PhD in Management. With the Masters I consider myself a Management Scientist (I already consult and work for a major aerospace company) but the PhD would add an air of legitimacy to the consulting that even the Masters doesn't offer.

In your field being a Doctor is paramount. In mine it's less defined. However, I seem to have all this time on my hands now that I've finished, so why not?

Wasn't it cool to wear the "top of the line" robe for commencement? A good friend of mine is now Chair of the Geosciences Department at FHSU. I was at his graduation from CU for his PhD and it was MIGHTY impressive! Spend some time patting yourself on the back and feeling superior! You EARNED it!
