I finally got around to replacing the lame factory tire repair kit

    I removed this:

    and replaced it with this:



    Everything fit in the original cubby, inside the bag, on top of the towel.

    The cover sits flush, just as with the stock kit:



    I now have a little more confidence that I can repair a flat, in the event that using the complimentary roadside assistance is impractical or inconvenient.

    Maybe a contest to design the coolest looking 5th wheel mount on the back of a plugin Prius? An opportunity to improve mpg via boat tails? Big tails and wings are the future of high MPGing...

    Sorry, I can't really tell what you replaced it with, can you tell us in text? Is it the suggested replacement from the PIP FAQ? Or something else?

    I leave it there and carry a motorcycle air pump (very small and lightweight) and a regular tire repair kit.

    You may want to add a small set of needle-nose pliers, small diagonal cutters, a kneeling cloth, and a few pairs of the blue nitrile disposable gloves to your set.
    I've repaired a few tires with the plug kits- they work great, but threading the wick through the needle is a really tight fit (use needle-nose pliers for that job to pull the wick through) and the wicks are extremely sticky and messy (use gloves). Once you've set the plug in the tire- use diagonal cutters to cut it flush with the tire surface so it doesn't get pulled out by road friction.

    Slime 1011 Tubeless Automotive tire sealant (sensor safe)
    Slime 1034-A T handle tire plug kit
    1 pair Mechanix gloves
    1 towel (for kneeling on)
    1 LED headlamp

    I'm going to add a pair of needle nose pliers (with integrated cutter) and some nitrile gloves per NY_Rob's suggestion (Thanks!)

    Add just a cutter also, some times you can't cut close enough with a needle nose. :)

    I chose the VIAIR 85P because I saw it recommended on some 4WD Off-Road forums. Those guys are constantly airing down their tires for more traction off-road, and then they have to reinflate them when they are done 4 wheeling. That means they use portable compressors often, so they need one that is durable, and can handle tires with a much larger volume of air than a 15" Prius tire holds. They probably have more weight resting on those tires while they're being inflated too.
